Chapter 1 – The Fall Begins

Damian Mercer had always believed power came with permanence.

That illusion lasted exactly nine minutes.

By the time he stumbled out of the executive conference room, every employee in the hallway had already received the same notification. His executive credentials had been revoked. His biometric access no longer existed. The elevators refused to recognize his identity.

The building that had once carried his name no longer acknowledged he had ever worked there.

"What is this?" Damian barked, pounding his fist against the security gate.

The guard who had greeted him every morning for six years lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry, sir. My instructions come directly from the board."

"The board answers to me!"

"They answer to Ms. Voss now."

Those words struck harder than any punch.

Behind him, whispers spread through the lobby.

"That's him."

"They actually removed him."

"I heard she owns everything."

Damian refused to look back.

His phone vibrated continuously.

One message after another.

Chief Financial Officer has resigned.

Three institutional investors have withdrawn support.

Pending acquisition suspended.

Credit facilities under review.

His breathing became uneven.

Across the street, inside a black town car, Elena watched silently through the tinted window.

Her attorney, Samuel Reeves, closed another folder.

"The first wave is complete."

She nodded but said nothing.

Samuel glanced at her split lip.

"You should probably see a doctor."

"I've had worse."

"You don't look satisfied."

Elena stared at the glass tower that carried Damian's initials across its entrance.

"For years I thought revenge would feel exciting."

"And?"

"It doesn't."

She leaned back against the leather seat.

"It feels expensive."

Samuel understood exactly what she meant.

Destroying Damian wasn't difficult.

Living through everything that had happened before today had been.

Years earlier, when Elena quietly founded Voss Global Holdings, she intentionally stayed invisible.

She preferred contracts over interviews.

Ownership over attention.

Influence over applause.

People like Damian never noticed invisible people.

That blindness had made him successful.

It had also become the reason he failed.

Her phone buzzed.

The chairman of the board.

"We're ready for the emergency vote."

Elena answered calmly.

"I'm on my way."

Across the street, Damian finally managed to call Veronica.

She answered on the third ring.

"Where are you?" he demanded.

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered,

"I don't think we should be seen together anymore."

The call ended.

For the first time in twenty years...

Damian Mercer stood completely alone.
