Chapter 1 — The Smile That Started the Fall

Ethan Caldwell stopped only inches away from Isabella.
The orchestra had already fallen silent.
Hundreds of wealthy guests pretended to sip champagne while secretly waiting to see how the confrontation would unfold.
Ethan smiled the way he always did when cameras were nearby.
Warm.
Confident.
Untouchable.
He reached out with two fingers and slowly lifted Isabella's chin so everyone could see her face.
"There you are," he said softly enough to sound affectionate. "I was beginning to think you'd lost your nerve."
His fingers pressed against the bruise hidden beneath her makeup.
Pain shot through her jaw.
She didn't flinch.
He wanted her to.
"You should have stayed home," he whispered. "People don't enjoy ugly scenes."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"No," she answered. "They enjoy the truth."
Several guests exchanged nervous glances.
A senator quietly stepped backward.
A television journalist lowered her wineglass.
Something felt wrong.
Ethan chuckled and turned toward the crowd.
"My wife has always had a dramatic imagination," he announced. "She's been under tremendous stress."
A ripple of polite laughter spread across the ballroom.
Then Ethan leaned close enough that only Isabella could hear him.
"After tonight," he whispered, "no judge will believe a word you say."
She looked past him.
Toward the security cameras mounted high beneath the crystal ceiling.
"I know," she replied.
"That's why I don't need a judge."

For the first time that evening...
His smile faded.
