Chapter 3 - THE HOUSEKEEPER WHO READ THE NUMBERS

Nora had not always been a housekeeper.

She earned a degree in forensic accounting.

After Alice died, Nora returned to Crosshaven because her younger brother needed medical care.

The estate offered housing, insurance, and a flexible schedule.

Celeste placed her in domestic service.

Damien assumed Nora wanted quieter work after losing her mother.

He had never asked.

Nora told Detective Ward the story from a hospital examination room.

Her right hand was fractured.

She had a concussion.

The cut inside her mouth required five stitches.

Damien waited outside until Nora gave permission for him to enter.

When he stepped inside, she looked smaller beneath the white blanket.

“I should have known what your qualifications were.”

Nora looked toward the window.

“You knew my title.”

“That was enough for you.”

The sentence hurt because it was true.

Damien sat several feet away.

“What did you find?”

Nora explained that the household payroll system connected to Crosshaven Resorts.

She noticed retirement deductions that never reached employee accounts.

At first, the differences were small.

Then she found transfers totaling thirty-four million dollars.

The money passed through three consulting companies.

Each company belonged to someone connected to Celeste’s family.

Arden Cultural Development.

Northstar Wellness.

Silverline Security.

Celeste’s father, Victor Arden, controlled all three through hidden partnerships.

“Who approved the transfers?” Damien asked.

“Your chief financial officer.”

“Graham Cole?”

Nora nodded.

Graham had been Damien’s closest friend since college.

They built Crosshaven Resorts together.

He had been best man at Damien and Celeste’s wedding.

Damien felt disbelief rise inside him.

Nora reached toward a sealed evidence bag.

“My mother’s notebook is inside my phone case.”

Detective Ward removed the phone recovered from Celeste’s wet dress.

Behind the protective cover was a thin memory card.

Alice had documented suspicious invoices before her death.

She believed Victor Arden used construction companies to drain money from Crosshaven projects.

She also suspected someone was changing Damien’s medication.

Damien looked at Nora.

“What medication?”

“The sleep capsules Celeste gives you after flights.”

He remembered the blue pills.

Celeste said they were prescribed for jet lag.

Damien often woke with headaches and missing pieces of the previous evening.

He blamed exhaustion.

Nora continued.

“My mother wrote that you signed papers while barely awake.”

“What papers?”

“She didn’t know.”

“She was trying to find out.”

Alice’s final entry read:

Celeste says the marriage will protect the transfer.

Victor says Damien only needs to appear incapable long enough for the board to act.

If anything happens to me, check the old wine cellar camera.

The old cellar had been sealed after Alice’s death.

Celeste told Damien water damage made it unsafe.

Detective Ward obtained a search warrant.

Behind a wall of empty wine racks, investigators found a hidden security recorder.

The device had no visible hard drive.

Nora pointed to a loose stone beneath the cabinet.

Alice had hidden the drive inside the wall.

The final recording showed Celeste entering the cellar with Victor Arden.

Alice stood near the door holding a folder.

Victor said:

“You should have taken the money.”

Alice answered:

“You are stealing from people who clean your rooms and cook your food.”

Celeste moved toward her.

“You are forgetting who owns this house.”

Alice looked directly at her.

“No.”

“I remember exactly who does.”
