Chapter 5: The Truth That Burned the Past

Victor Hale was found two days later.
Not in hiding.
But waiting.
He stood inside the estate’s old greenhouse as if he had been expecting them.
“I wondered when you’d remember,” he said calmly.
Caroline stepped forward, shaking with rage. “You stole her from me.”
Victor smiled faintly. “I saved her from you.”
Daniel grabbed him. “You burned the house!”
Victor did not resist.
“I didn’t burn it,” he said softly. “I removed her from it before the fire finished the job someone else started.”
Silence fell.
Caroline froze.
“…What did you say?”
Victor’s gaze shifted.
“To protect your family, I erased a truth you were never meant to survive.”
Amelia stepped forward slowly. “What truth?”
Victor looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said:
“The fire wasn’t meant to take you.”
“It was meant to take your father.”
The greenhouse went still.
Caroline’s breath stopped completely.
Because for the first time, the story was no longer just about a lost child.
It was about a hidden war inside the Whitaker family.
