Chapter 1: The Silence After Truth

The chapel did not move.

No one breathed.

Caroline Whitaker stood frozen in front of Amelia Ross, her trembling fingers still clutching the open locket. The faded photograph inside felt heavier than any truth she had ever carried.

“Impossible…” Caroline whispered, but her voice broke halfway.

Daniel stepped between them, confused and shaken. “Mom, what are you saying? That’s not—”

But Caroline raised her hand.

Not to stop him.

To reach Amelia.

Her voice cracked. “That mark… only one person in this world had it like that.”

Amelia’s lips parted slightly. “I don’t understand…”

Caroline’s knees weakened.

Twenty years ago, she had been told her five-year-old daughter died in a fire. No body was ever shown. Only ashes. Only silence.

And yet—

Standing in front of her was a woman with the same star-shaped birthmark… the same eyes she had once kissed every night before bed.

Caroline whispered, barely audible:

May you like

“Your name… was Lily.”

Amelia flinched as if the name itself hurt.
