Chapter 2: The Orphanage Record

The wedding was forgotten.
Within an hour, documents were being pulled, phone calls made, and old records reopened.
Amelia sat alone in a side room of the chapel, wrapped in a borrowed shawl. Daniel stayed beside her, refusing to leave.
Caroline returned with a trembling file.
“St. Agnes Orphanage,” she said. “You were brought there the night of the fire.”
Amelia looked up sharply. “I was told I was abandoned.”
Caroline shook her head violently. “No. No, I never abandoned you.”
Her voice collapsed into something raw.
“You were taken.”
The file fell open on the table. Burn reports. Police notes. A missing child case that had been quietly closed within weeks.
Daniel read it in silence, his face tightening with anger.
“This was covered up,” he said.
Caroline whispered, “Someone wanted me to believe you were gone.”
Amelia pressed her fingers to her temple. “Then who am I?”
Caroline reached out slowly.
May you like
“You are my daughter.”
And this time, Amelia did not step back.
