Chapter 3: The Man Who Lied

The truth did not stay buried for long.

That night, Caroline made a call she had avoided for twenty years—an old investigator named Harris.

Within hours, a name surfaced.

Victor Hale.

Former estate manager. Fired shortly after the fire. Last known associate of the Whitaker household.

Daniel slammed his fist onto the table. “So someone inside our family took her?”

Caroline’s face turned pale.

“Yes,” she said quietly. “And I think I know why.”

She opened another drawer.

Inside was a second photograph—Caroline, younger, standing beside Victor Hale at a charity gala.

Amelia stared at it. “You knew him?”

Caroline’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“He was obsessed with our family… and with me.”

The realization settled like poison.

The fire. The disappearance. The falsified death.

It had never been an accident.

It had been a theft.
