Chapter 20 - The Ghost at My Window

The city searched for Nolan for six days.
Nothing.
No credit cards.
No phone.
No border crossing.
No confirmed sightings.
Torres believed someone from the remaining consortium helped him escape.
Dante increased security around my building.
I hated it.
But I understood.
On the seventh night, I came home and found a white envelope beneath my door.
No stamp.
No name.
Inside was a photograph.
Me and Dante outside the restaurant.
The second kiss.
Written across the back:
YOU SHOULD HAVE COME HOME.
My hands trembled.
Then stopped.
Old Evelyn would have hidden.
Old Evelyn would have called Nolan and begged him to explain.
Old Evelyn believed fear was something she had to manage privately.
I called Torres.
Then Dante.
Then building security.
Within minutes, my apartment filled with people.
No shame.
No secrecy.
No closed doors.
Dante read the message.
“He wants you afraid.”
“He’s going to be disappointed.”
The security footage showed a delivery driver leaving the envelope.
Torres traced the order to a prepaid account.
Another dead end.
But Nolan had made one mistake.
The photograph was printed professionally.
Isabella identified the paper stock.
Only three specialty labs in Chicago carried it.
By morning, police had an address.
An abandoned photography studio in Pilsen.
Inside they found clothes.
Cash.
Fake documents.
And photographs of me covering the walls.
But Nolan wasn’t there.
On one table sat a laptop.
Torres opened it carefully.
A video file was scheduled to upload automatically at midnight.
The title read:
EVELYN CARTER - THE TRUTH.
I watched the first thirty seconds.
Nolan sat in front of a camera.
“If you’re watching this, Evelyn has convinced everyone I’m a monster.”
He smiled.
“But monsters don’t build themselves.”
I shut the laptop.
Torres looked at me.
“You don’t have to watch.”
“I know.”
That was why I could choose to.
We played the rest.
Nolan tried to rewrite everything.
His violence.
His fraud.
His stalking.
His lies.
Always someone else’s fault.
My fault.
Luca’s fault.
Dante’s fault.
His childhood.
His ambition.
His fear.
When the video ended, I felt something unexpected.
Nothing.
Not rage.
Not grief.
Nothing.
He no longer had enough power inside me to ruin an afternoon.
Then Torres’s phone rang.
She listened.
Her eyes lifted.
May you like
“We found him.”
