Chapter 16 - The Trap Inside the Transfer

At 11:54 p.m., I entered an abandoned river terminal carrying the West Fulton deed.

Nolan stood beneath a hanging work light.

Dante sat in a chair twenty feet behind him.

His hands were tied.

He was bruised but conscious.

Our eyes met.

He immediately shook his head.

Don’t.

I kept walking.

Nolan smiled.

“You came.”

“Let him go.”

“Sign first.”

He placed transfer papers on a metal table.

“You always loved paperwork.”

I looked at him.

“I loved you once too.”

Something flickered in his face.

Maybe shame.

Maybe nostalgia.

It disappeared.

“That was your choice.”

“No.”

“You designed it.”

His jaw tightened.

“I made you happy.”

“You studied me.”

“I gave you everything.”

“You took everything.”

His voice rose.

“I protected you.”

I almost laughed.

“From whom?”

He pointed toward Dante.

“Men like him.”

Dante spoke from the chair.

“She needed protection from you.”

Nolan struck him across the face once.

I flinched.

Dante looked back at him calmly.

“That all?”

Nolan turned toward me.

“Sign.”

I picked up the pen.

The deed was real.

The transfer page was not.

Isabella had created a document containing a hidden authentication marker.

If Nolan filed it electronically, federal investigators could trace the recipient network.

But I needed him talking first.

“Where’s the ledger?”

Nolan smiled.

“Safe.”

“Who has copies?”

“Enough people.”

“Harold?”

“He was never important.”

“Luca?”

“Too emotional.”

“Bianca?”

“Useful idiot.”

Nolan stepped closer.

“You want to know who really runs this?”

“Yes.”

He leaned toward me.

“People Dante spent thirty years pretending he escaped.”

Behind him, Dante’s expression changed.

Nolan continued.

“Judges.”

“Developers.”

“Police commanders.”

“Bankers.”

“Men who attended that ballroom and smiled while you kissed him.”

My skin went cold.

The entire room had been full of people connected to the scheme.

Then Nolan whispered.

“And one of them is listening right now.”

The lights snapped off.

Gunfire cracked outside.

Not inside.

Torres’s team had been discovered.

Nolan grabbed my wrist.

Old fear flashed through me.

But this time I didn’t freeze.

I drove my heel down on his foot, ripped free, and kicked the table into him.

Dante moved at the same instant.

His chair toppled sideways.

Marco burst through a service door.

Chaos lasted seconds.

When the lights returned, Nolan was on the floor.

Alive.

Disarmed.

Dante was free.

And Agent Torres was staring at one of her own men.

A senior federal supervisor named Richard Vale.

He had a gun aimed directly at her.

“Drop yours, Maya.”

Torres froze.

Vale smiled.

Nolan laughed from the floor.

“I told you.”

May you like

“The consortium was already inside.”
