Chapter 12 - West Fulton

Rain hammered the warehouse roof.

The building smelled like rust, concrete, and old river water.

Nolan waited inside.

Seeing him again made my body remember fear before my mind could stop it.

His face looked exhausted.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

But his eyes carried the same entitlement.

“Evie.”

“Don’t call me that.”

He smiled weakly.

“You always liked it.”

“I liked a lot of things before I understood what they cost.”

His gaze moved to Dante.

Then Luca stepped from the shadows.

Bianca sat nearby with her wrists tied in front of her.

Alive.

Sofia exhaled beside me.

Luca held up the brass key.

“Nolan delivered.”

I looked at Nolan.

“You stole that from me.”

“You weren’t using it.”

The casual cruelty was almost impressive.

I laughed.

Nolan frowned.

“What?”

“For two years I thought you were powerful.”

His face tightened.

“You terrified me.”

“I confused that with strength.”

I stepped closer.

“But look at you.”

“You’re somebody else’s errand boy.”

His jaw clenched.

Luca intervened.

“Enough.”

He pointed toward an old elevator door.

The vault was beneath us.

I held the deed Isabella had prepared.

Proof of my legal control.

“Bianca first.”

Luca smiled.

“No.”

“Then nothing opens.”

“Evelyn.”

“No.”

I surprised myself with how steady I sounded.

“You need three things.”

“The key.”

“The code.”

“And me.”

“You control two.”

“I control the one you can’t replace.”

Luca looked toward Dante.

“Is this what you taught her?”

Dante answered quietly.

“No.”

“She learned it surviving men like you.”

Luca’s smile vanished.

He untied Bianca.

She crossed the floor.

Marco pulled her behind our line.

Then Luca entered the code.

Nolan inserted the brass key.

I placed my palm against the old biometric reader after Isabella registered the ownership transfer.

The mechanism groaned.

The vault door opened.

Rows of metal shelves disappeared into darkness.

Boxes.

Ledgers.

Hard drives.

Luca stepped forward.

So did Dante.

Then every light in the warehouse went out.

Someone shouted.

A gunshot cracked into the ceiling.

Glass shattered.

When emergency lights flickered on, Nolan was gone.

And so was one black case from the center shelf.

Luca stared at the empty space.

“That idiot.”

Dante looked at him.

“What was in the case?”

Luca’s face drained of color.

“The current ledger.”

Not thirty-year-old crimes.

Current ones.

The names of people still moving money through Chicago.

Nolan hadn’t come to help Luca.

He had come to steal the only thing valuable enough to buy his freedom.

And now every powerful person named in that ledger would be hunting him.

Including the people who believed I still had it.
