Chapter 17 - The Man Behind the Badge

Richard Vale had supervised the investigation for a year.

Which meant every time Torres got close, he redirected her.

Every warrant.

Every witness.

Every missing piece.

He controlled them.

Vale ordered everyone to lower their weapons.

Marco didn’t.

Neither did Luca.

Vale pointed his gun toward me.

“That would be unfortunate.”

Dante’s voice became dangerously calm.

“You hurt her, you don’t leave.”

Vale smiled.

“You’re still pretending you command the room.”

“No.”

Dante glanced toward me.

“She does.”

Vale followed his eyes.

That was the distraction Torres needed.

She moved.

Marco moved.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Seconds later, Vale was pinned against the floor.

No heroic speech.

No dramatic execution.

Just handcuffs.

For once, the law had arrived before revenge.

Nolan began bargaining immediately.

“I can testify.”

Torres looked disgusted.

“You haven’t even been charged yet.”

“I know names.”

“So do we.”

“You don’t know all of them.”

Dante crouched beside him.

Nolan looked up.

For a moment I expected Dante to threaten him.

Instead, Dante said something colder.

“You spent years believing fear made you important.”

“Tomorrow, you’ll discover how ordinary you are when nobody is afraid of you.”

Nolan looked at me.

“Evelyn.”

I stepped back.

“Don’t.”

“Please.”

That word nearly stopped me.

I had said it so many times.

He had ignored it.

Now he wanted it to matter.

“You said you loved me.”

He sounded desperate.

“I did.”

His eyes brightened with hope.

“And that’s the part I forgive myself for.”

His expression collapsed.

Torres led him away.

Outside, dawn was beginning to color the river.

Dante stood beside me.

“You saved me.”

I shook my head.

“We saved each other.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he asked quietly.

“What happens now?”

I knew what he meant.

Not the investigation.

Not the property.

Us.

Weeks ago, I would have reached for certainty.

Now uncertainty felt healthy.

“I go home.”

His face remained unreadable.

“Without me?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

No argument.

No manipulation.

No demand.

Then he surprised me.

“Good.”

I frowned.

“You’re happy I’m leaving?”

“I’m happy you can.”

May you like

For some reason, that nearly broke my heart.
