Chapter 8 β The Confession Beneath the Cross

The abandoned church stood at the end of a narrow country road, hidden behind overgrown oak trees and rusted iron gates. Rain from the night before still clung to the broken stained-glass windows, making the old building look haunted in the gray morning light.
Detective Sarah Brooks arrived first.
Two patrol cars blocked the entrance while officers searched the grounds.
Daniel parked beside them, his heart pounding.
"Did you find her?"
Brooks didn't answer immediately.
She simply pointed toward the church.
Inside.
The sanctuary smelled of dust and damp wood.
Sunlight streamed through cracked stained glass, painting faded colors across the floor.
Near the altar sat Monica.
She looked nothing like the confident housekeeper from the mansion.
Her clothes were torn.
Her hands trembled.
A fresh bandage wrapped around her shoulder.
When she saw Daniel, tears filled her eyes.
"I knew they'd come."
Daniel stopped a few feet away.
"Who?"
"The people your father pays."
Brooks motioned for the officers to secure every entrance before sitting across from Monica.
"I need the truth."
Monica gave a bitter laugh.
"You should've asked for that years ago."
She took a deep breath.
"I wasn't hired as a housekeeper."
Daniel frowned.
"Then why were you hired?"
"To watch Evelyn."
"For whom?"
Monica looked directly at him.
"William."
The name echoed through the empty church.
"He believed Evelyn knew something."
"Knew what?" Daniel asked.
Monica slowly shook her head.
"Not what."
"Who."
She reached into her coat and removed a faded photograph.
It showed a much younger William Carter standing beside another man in front of a small manufacturing plant.
Daniel immediately recognized his father.
The second man he didn't.
Monica handed him the picture.
"That's Evelyn's father."
Daniel stared at the photograph.
"What?"
Brooks leaned closer.
"Evelyn told us her father died before she finished college."
"He did."
Monica nodded.
"But not before building Carter Industries."
Silence.
Daniel looked confused.
"My father founded Carter Industries."
"No."
Monica's voice was firm.
"He stole it."
She pointed to the man beside William.
"Thomas Bennett."
"Evelyn's father."
"The real founder."
Daniel's world tilted.
Monica continued.
"Thirty years ago, Thomas and William were equal partners."
"When the company became valuable..."
She swallowed.
"...Thomas died in what everyone believed was a factory accident."
Brooks narrowed her eyes.
"You don't believe it was an accident."
"It wasn't."
Monica's voice cracked.
"I was there."
Everyone froze.
"I worked as a secretary back then."
"I saw William alter the safety reports."
"I saw him destroy evidence."
"I saw him tell the investigators the explosion was nobody's fault."
Daniel's face had gone pale.
"You're saying my father murdered his business partner?"
Monica nodded slowly.
"And when Evelyn inherited her father's remaining shares years later..."
She looked toward the church doors.
"...William realized the truth could eventually surface."
Brooks leaned forward.
"So he planned to eliminate her."
"And the baby."
"Because the child would inherit controlling interest under the trust."
Monica closed her eyes.
"I helped him."
Daniel stared at her.
She didn't look away.
"I accepted his money."
"I convinced myself Evelyn would never be hurt."
"But when I learned he intended to kill both mother and child..."
Her voice broke.
"...I couldn't let another innocent family be destroyed."
Brooks remained silent.
For the first time since this investigation began, Monica sounded genuinely remorseful.
Then one of the officers ran inside.
"Detective!"
Brooks turned.
"What is it?"
The officer held up a pair of binoculars.
"We found someone watching the church from the hill."
"Who?"
The officer handed her a long-range camera recovered from the bushes.
The memory card was still inside.
Brooks inserted it into her laptop.
Hundreds of photographs appeared.
The church.
The police cars.
Daniel.
Monica.
Every angle.
Every movement.
The most recent image had been taken less than two minutes earlier.
Brooks enlarged the final photograph.
In the reflection of Daniel's car window...
A black sedan was parked far up the hill.
The license plate was partially visible.
Daniel's breath caught.
He recognized it instantly.
It belonged to Victor Hale, the Carter family's longtime attorney.
At the bottom of the photograph, a timestamp flashed.
11:42 a.m.
Brooks looked toward the hill.
The sedan was already gone.
She closed the laptop slowly.
"They're not running anymore."
Daniel looked at Monica.
"No."
May you like
Monica whispered.
"They're getting ready for the final move."
