Chapter 7 – The Fire in the Nursery

At 2:17 a.m., the maternity ward was almost silent.

The lights had been dimmed. Nurses moved quietly between rooms, checking monitors and newborns. Evelyn had finally drifted into a light sleep with her daughter resting in a bassinet beside her bed.

Daniel refused to leave.

He sat in the corner, jacket still on, watching every person who entered the hallway.

Something felt wrong.

Then the fire alarm sounded.

Not loud at first.

Just one sharp beep.

Then another.

Within seconds, red emergency lights flashed across the ceiling.

A nurse hurried into the room.

"Mr. Carter, we have to evacuate this floor immediately."

Daniel instinctively reached for his daughter.

Another nurse appeared.

"I'll take the baby to the neonatal safe zone."

Daniel hesitated.

Hospital protocol.

He knew they were trained for this.

Still...

"No," Evelyn said weakly from the bed.

Everyone turned toward her.

"My daughter stays with us."

The nurse smiled reassuringly.

"Ma'am, it's procedure."

Detective Sarah Brooks stepped into the doorway.

She had refused to leave the hospital after William's DNA was identified.

Her eyes immediately narrowed.

"I don't recognize you."

The nurse froze.

"I... started my shift an hour ago."

Brooks looked at the name badge.

Emily Dawson.

She turned toward the charge nurse rushing down the hallway.

"Who's Emily Dawson?"

The charge nurse stopped.

"There isn't an Emily Dawson working tonight."

The woman holding the bassinet ran.

Brooks reacted instantly.

"Stop her!"

The fake nurse shoved the bassinet toward another corridor and sprinted for the emergency exit.

Daniel caught the bassinet before it tipped over.

His daughter cried loudly but remained unharmed.

Brooks and two officers chased the woman through the smoke-filled hallway.

She was fast.

Too fast.

She burst through the emergency stairwell door.

By the time officers reached the parking garage below...

She had vanished.

Only a discarded blonde wig and fake hospital ID remained on the concrete floor.

Firefighters quickly discovered the truth.

There had been no electrical fault.

Someone had deliberately ignited a storage closet using a timed incendiary device.

It wasn't meant to burn down the hospital.

It was meant to trigger an evacuation.

Long enough to separate Evelyn from her baby.

Long enough for someone to disappear.

Detective Brooks stood beside Daniel.

"This wasn't random."

"I know."

"They're escalating."

Daniel looked at his sleeping daughter.

"They're desperate."

Across town, William Carter stood inside his private office.

Victor Hale entered without knocking.

"It failed."

William didn't even look up from the documents on his desk.

"The child?"

"Still alive."

William sighed.

"Unfortunate."

Victor shifted nervously.

"The woman escaped before police caught her."

William finally raised his eyes.

"No."

Victor frowned.

"No?"

"She didn't escape."

William walked to the window overlooking the city.

"If Monica is alive..."

"She knows too much."

Victor slowly understood.

"You had your own people chasing her."

William nodded.

"I don't rescue liabilities."

"You eliminate them."

Victor swallowed.

"And if she reaches the police first?"

William smiled faintly.

"She won't."

The following morning, Detective Brooks received a call from Highway Patrol.

A vehicle matching Monica's description had been found abandoned near an old railway bridge thirty miles outside the city.

Inside the car were Monica's purse...

Her passport...

And blood on the driver's seat.

But no body.

Police divers searched the river below for hours.

Nothing.

No Monica.

No weapon.

No answers.

Brooks stared at the evidence photographs.

"It doesn't make sense."

Daniel looked over her shoulder.

"What?"

"Whoever staged this wanted us to believe she's dead."

"So you think she's alive?"

Brooks nodded slowly.

"I think Monica disappeared..."

She tapped the photograph of the bloodstained driver's seat.

"...because someone is hunting her."

At that exact moment, Evelyn's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

Daniel answered cautiously.

No one spoke.

Only heavy breathing.

Then...

Monica's terrified whisper.

"They're listening."

A loud crash interrupted her.

Someone shouted in the background.

Monica cried out.

Before the line went dead, she managed to say only six words.

"Don't trust... the family attorney..."

The call disconnected.

Detective Brooks immediately traced the number.

The signal had lasted only eleven seconds.

But it was enough.

She looked up at Daniel.

"It came from an abandoned church outside the city."

Daniel grabbed his car keys.

Brooks drew her service weapon.

"If Monica is still alive..."

May you like

She looked at Evelyn.

"...she may be the only person who knows how deep this conspiracy really goes."
