Chapter 3 β The Recording No One Was Supposed to Hear

Rain hammered against the hospital windows as surgeons wheeled Evelyn toward the operating room. Every contraction came harder than the last, but her mind remained fixed on the tiny recorder now sitting in Daniel's jacket pocket.
If that recording disappeared, so did the truth.
"Save my baby," she whispered as the doors closed behind her.
Daniel stood frozen in the hallway until a nurse gently guided him away.
His phone buzzed.
MICHAEL: COME HOME. NOW.
Back at the Carter mansion, the atmosphere had changed.
Police officers were photographing the staircase while household employees gathered nervously in the dining room. No one spoke above a whisper.
Michael met Daniel at the front entrance.
"You need to hear this."
He led him into the library and shut the doors.
On the desk sat the digital recorder.
Daniel pressed Play.
At first there was only the sound of Evelyn falling.
Wood.
Marble.
A muffled cry.
Then silence.
His fists tightened.
Monica's voice finally emerged.
"So... you finally fell."
Daniel stared at the speaker.
"I thought you'd make it another week."
Michael's jaw clenched.
Then came the sentence neither man would ever forget.
"I hope the baby dies first."
Daniel stopped breathing.
The room remained silent as Monica's phone call played through the recorder.
"It's done."
A man's voice answered.
"Is she breathing?"
"I don't think so."
"Check."
Another pause.
"No. I think both of them are gone."
Then the words that changed everything.
"Good. We'll finally own everything."
The recording ended.
No one moved.
Michael spoke first.
"That's enough to arrest Monica."
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"No."
Michael looked at him in disbelief.
"Are you serious?"
"She isn't the mastermind."
"She doesn't have to be."
"Yes, she does."
Daniel replayed the final thirty seconds three more times.
Each time, he listened less to the words than to the background.
A faint ticking.
A metallic clang.
And then...
A train whistle.
Very distant.
Michael frowned.
"What are you listening for?"
"The caller."
"It's just a phone."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He rewound again.
"There."
The whistle sounded once more.
"Our house is twenty miles from the nearest railroad."
Michael's expression changed.
"So the man wasn't here."
"Exactly."
"He was somewhere else."
Daniel leaned back in his chair.
"And he wasn't hiding."
The whistle blew every afternoon at exactly three o'clock from the freight line that passed behind Carter Steelβthe family's largest manufacturing plant.
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
His father had spent the afternoon there.
So had the company's executives.
Including...
Chief Financial Officer Victor Hale.
Daniel looked toward the window.
"I need security footage."
"From the mansion?"
"No."
"The factory."
Meanwhile, upstairs, Monica sat alone in her small bedroom.
She had packed one suitcase.
Inside were cash, a fake passport, and a one-way airline ticket leaving at dawn.
She smiled.
Everything had gone according to plan.
The pregnant wife was in surgery.
The police believed it had been an accident.
Within twenty-four hours, she'd disappear forever.
A gentle knock sounded at her bedroom door.
She relaxed.
"Come in."
The door opened.
She expected another maid.
Instead, she found Daniel standing there.
He quietly closed the door behind him.
In his hand...
He held the digital recorder.
Monica's smile vanished.
Daniel pressed Play.
Her own voice filled the room.
"I hope the baby dies first."
The color drained from Monica's face.
Daniel looked at her with eyes she had never seen before.
Cold.
Controlled.
Merciless.

"I'll ask you exactly once," he said.
"Who were you talking to?"
