Chapter 5 β The Letter That Changed Everything

Daniel took the envelope with trembling hands.
The paper was thick, expensive, and sealed with dark red wax. Across the front, Evelyn's name was written in elegant script.
For Evelyn CarterβIf I Fail.
"If you cared about my wife," Daniel said, "why didn't you give this to her?"
Monica lowered herself into a chair, looking suddenly older than she had moments before.
"Because someone was always watching."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"There are cameras in this house that don't belong to your security system."
His eyes narrowed.
"That's impossible."
"I used to believe that too."
She pointed toward the smoke detector above the bedroom door.
"Take it down."
Daniel hesitated before climbing onto a chair. He twisted the detector loose.
His stomach dropped.
Hidden inside was a tiny wireless camera.
Not made by the company's security contractor.
Not listed on the mansion's surveillance network.
Someone had installed it in secret.
Daniel slowly looked back at Monica.
"How many?"
"I've found eleven."
His pulse quickened.
"Found?"
"I stopped looking after eleven."
She reached into her suitcase again and removed a folded blueprint of the mansion.
Nearly every bedroom was marked with a small red circle.
"So someone has been watching us..."
"For months."
"Maybe years."
Daniel suddenly remembered Evelyn's strange comments.
Medicine bottles moved.
Doors left open.
Conversations cut short.
She hadn't been imagining things.
Someone had been studying their every move.
At the hospital, Evelyn lay awake in the recovery room.
Her newborn daughter slept peacefully in a bassinet beside the bed.
Tiny fingers.
Dark hair.
A heartbeat that had survived against impossible odds.
A nurse quietly entered.
"Mrs. Carter?"
"Yes?"
"You have a visitor."
"I didn't ask for anyone."
The nurse smiled politely.
"He said he's family."
Before Evelyn could answer, an elderly man stepped inside.
Silver hair.
Perfectly tailored navy suit.
A polished cane.
William Carter.
Daniel's father.
He smiled warmly.
"My dear."
Evelyn's smile never appeared.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to see my granddaughter."
"You came surprisingly fast."
William chuckled.
"I heard the news."
He approached the bassinet and looked down at the sleeping baby.
"She's beautiful."
His voice sounded sincere.
Yet something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
Evelyn watched him carefully.
He never once asked how she had fallen.
Never once asked if she was in pain.
Never once mentioned Monica.
Instead, he asked only one question.
"Did Daniel recover your recorder?"
Evelyn froze.
She hadn't told anyone about the recorder except Daniel.
Not even the police knew it existed yet.
She forced herself to remain calm.
"What recorder?"
William's smile faltered for the briefest moment.
Then it returned.
"My mistake."
He adjusted his cufflinks.
"I assumed Daniel mentioned it."
"No."
"I suppose I misunderstood."
He leaned over and gently touched the baby's blanket.
"I'll let you rest."
As he reached the door, Evelyn noticed something she had never seen before.
A small fresh scratch across the back of his right hand.
Three thin lines.
Almost parallel.
Like someone had clawed him.
The image flashed in her mind.
As she fell...
She had grabbed at someone.
Her fingernails had scraped skin before she lost control.
She looked down at her own broken fingernails.
One still carried traces of dried blood.
Not hers.
William paused without turning around.
"Family should trust each other, Evelyn."
Then he left.
The door clicked shut.
Evelyn immediately reached for the call button.
When the nurse returned, Evelyn spoke quietly.
"I need the police."
"Right now."
Back at the mansion, Daniel finally broke the seal on Monica's envelope.
Inside was only a single sheet of paper.
No signature.
No explanation.
Just one handwritten sentence.
"Never ask who benefits from Evelyn's death. Ask who benefits if her daughter never inherits."
Daniel read it twice.
Then a third time.
Suddenly, he wasn't thinking about his wife anymore.
He was thinking about the Carter family trust.
The trust that automatically transferred controlling ownership of Carter Industries to Evelyn and her firstborn child.
If both mother and daughter died...
The fortune would pass to only one remaining beneficiary.
His father.
William Carter.
Daniel's hands began to shake.
May you like
For the first time in his life...
He wondered whether the man who had raised him had been planning to murder his own granddaughter.
