CHAPTER 6 — HER FINAL GIFT

Six months later, the divorce hearing lasted less than twenty minutes.

Neither side argued.

Neither side raised their voices.

When the judge approved the settlement, Ryan signed the final page with trembling hands.

As Emma stood to leave, he spoke one last time.

"I loved you."

She paused.

"I believe you."

Hope flashed across his face.

Then she finished.

"But love without respect becomes another kind of prison."

She handed him a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Ryan was holding newborn Noah in the hospital.

The happiest day of his life.

Written on the back, in Emma's handwriting, were the final words he would ever receive from her.

"I didn't leave because your family hated me."

"I left because the man who promised to protect me kept asking me to survive them instead."

Emma walked away without another word.

Ryan remained seated long after the courtroom had emptied.

For the first time in his life...

He understood that the greatest loss wasn't his marriage.

It was becoming the reason the woman he loved had to choose freedom over him.

And some doors...

May you like

once closed...

never open again.
