CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO WALKED AWAY

The front door closed behind me with a quiet click.
Not a slam.
Not a dramatic goodbye.
Just one soft sound.
Yet somehow, it echoed louder than every insult I had swallowed over the last five years.
Outside, the night air felt colder than I remembered.
I adjusted Noah against my shoulder as he slept peacefully, completely unaware that his entire world had just changed.
Behind me, I heard Ryan's footsteps.
"Emma!"
I didn't stop.
"Emma, wait!"
His voice cracked for the first time since I'd met him.
Not angry.
Afraid.
I reached the waiting taxi before he caught me.
He grabbed the door just as I was climbing inside.
"Please... don't do this."
I finally looked at him.
Really looked.
The expensive suit.
The polished shoes.
The man who always cared more about appearances than people.
"You made your choice," I said quietly.
"I just finally made mine."
The driver pulled away.
Ryan stood frozen in the mansion driveway, watching the taillights disappear into the darkness.
Inside the dining room, Margaret stared at the empty chair where I had been sitting.

For the first time in years...
Nobody celebrated.
