CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WHO LOST EVERYTHING

Three weeks later.
Ryan arrived outside Emma's new home carrying flowers.
No security guard stopped him.
The receptionist did.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"Mrs. Carter isn't accepting visitors."
"I just need five minutes."
"I'm afraid not."
Ryan looked through the glass walls.
Emma walked across the lobby holding Noah.
She was smiling.
Not pretending.
Actually smiling.
Beside her walked an older gentleman.
The chairman of one of the largest investment firms in the country.
He wasn't her boyfriend.
He was her mentor.
The man who had helped build the business she'd quietly created while everyone mocked her.
Ryan finally understood something terrifying.
Emma hadn't left with nothing.
She had left with everything that truly mattered.
Dignity.
Freedom.
A future.

The flowers slipped from his hand.
She never looked back.
