CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET SHE NEVER TOLD HIM

The airport was almost empty.
Noah slept through the security line, through boarding, even through takeoff.
Only after the plane disappeared above the clouds did I finally allow myself to cry.
Silent tears.
No sobbing.
No breakdown.
Just relief.
A flight attendant approached gently.
"Traveling alone?"
I smiled faintly.
"Not anymore."
She looked at the sleeping baby and smiled back.
Hours later, after Noah fell asleep again, I opened the envelope I had carried for months.
Inside were documents Ryan had never seen.
Property deeds.
Bank statements.
Investment accounts.
Every asset listed under one name.
Mine.
When Ryan's father's business nearly collapsed three years earlier, I had secretly saved it using the inheritance my grandmother left me.
Millions of dollars.
Not one cent came from Ryan's family.
Not one.
I had simply let them believe they were the powerful ones.
Because love isn't supposed to keep score.
Until respect disappears.
At the bottom of the folder lay one final document.
The divorce papers.
