Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE ON FIRE

Peter returned to Denver three days later.

He entered through the storm drain beneath my property.

The original estate plans included an emergency tunnel from the Cold War era.

Only family trustees and security directors knew it existed.

Grant had given him the plans.

The house remained sealed as a crime scene.

No one should have been inside.

At 1:08 a.m., the fire system activated.

Peter set fires in the server room, office, and nursery.

He wanted the camera archive destroyed.

He did not know the primary recordings were stored off-site.

He did know the house contained original trust documents, corporate seals, and physical evidence connected to North Ridge.

Firefighters arrived within six minutes.

The nursery burned first.

Lily’s yellow dress hung inside the closet.

The birthday gift remained unopened beneath the window.

Both were destroyed.

I watched the fire through a secure news feed beside Lily’s hospital bed.

She saw the flames.

Her body became rigid.

I reached for the tablet.

She stopped me.

Then she pointed toward the burning house.

Her lips moved.

A sound emerged.

“Home.”

It was the first word she had spoken in three weeks.

I held her face.

“Yes.”

“That was our home.”

She shook her head.

Tears filled her eyes.

“No.”

She pointed toward me.

Then Mrs. Bell.

Then herself.

“Home.”

The word broke into a whisper.

But it existed.

The house was property.

We were home.

I held her until she slept.

Firefighters recovered one body from the tunnel.

It was not Peter.

The dead man was Dr. Simon Carver.

The same physician who created my false psychological assessment.

He had been shot before the fire.

Peter brought him to the house to destroy evidence.

Then he killed him.

Carver’s pocket contained a handwritten list of payments and names.

At the bottom was Grant Carlisle.

Beside Grant’s name was a date.

The next day.

Peter planned to remove Grant from federal detention during a medical transfer.

Grant had become dangerous.

Vanessa’s recording proved he knew too much.

Peter intended to kill him and blame me.

The plan continued even as Grant believed Peter was helping him escape.

Federal officials changed the transfer route.

A decoy vehicle left the detention center.

Peter attacked it on the highway.

Agents surrounded him beneath an overpass.

He carried explosives and one of Grant’s personal firearms.

When ordered to surrender, he attempted to detonate the vehicle.

The device failed.

The music-box authentication chip had been inserted into the triggering system.

Our engineers remotely disabled it.

The birthday gift Peter stole from Lily became the reason agents survived.

He was arrested without a shot fired.

Inside his vehicle were forged letters from me.

One confessed to killing Grant.

Another described Lily as a burden.

A third claimed I had invented the North Ridge conspiracy to protect company secrets.

Peter had prepared my voice without ever understanding it.

The letters were emotional in ways I was not.

Dramatic.

Apologetic.

Desperate for Grant’s forgiveness.

He believed every woman eventually begged the man who betrayed her.

That mistake made the forgeries easy to expose.
