Chapter 6 - THE CALL FROM THE TRAITOR

“Where are you?”
Peter laughed quietly.
“You know better than to ask a question I will not answer.”
“You placed a chemical weapon near a child.”
“I placed leverage near an asset.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Lily is five years old.”
“That does not change her legal value.”
His lack of emotion clarified everything.
People became positions on a board.
Grant was access.
Vanessa was influence.
Lily was leverage.
I was an obstacle.
“What do you want?”
“The Hartwell encryption keys.”
“No.”
“Then your daughter spends the next decade looking over her shoulder.”
“She already will.”
“Because of you.”
“No.”
I kept my voice calm.
“Because adults like you decided her fear was useful.”
Peter became quiet.
He had expected anger.
He knew how to manipulate anger.
Calm forced him to listen.
“The encryption keys are divided,” I continued.
“You cannot access the defense systems through me alone.”
“I know.”
“You need Grant.”
“We have everything Grant knows.”
“That is not much.”
Peter laughed again.
“You finally said something honest about your husband.”
I looked toward the medical wing.
“What happened to the birthday files?”
“What?”
“The account you used to order decorations.”
Another silence.
Peter had not expected the question.
Two months earlier, I created a birthday delivery for Lily.
The order included cupcakes, a yellow dress, and a custom music box.
The music box was built by Hartwell’s secure fabrication unit because I wanted it to play a recording in my voice.
The device contained a private authentication chip.
Not classified.
But traceable.
If Peter intercepted the order, the chip might have been repurposed inside the surveillance network.
“Where is the music box?” I asked.
Peter ended the call.
I contacted the delivery company.
The package reached my house three weeks earlier.
Grant signed for it.
The living-room footage showed Vanessa opening the box.
She removed the music mechanism.
Then Peter arrived through the side entrance and took it.
He had used my daughter’s birthday present to create an access key for stolen equipment.
The chip’s tracking function remained dormant until activated by a specific frequency.
Our engineers activated it.
A location appeared beneath an abandoned luxury development outside Vail.
The property belonged to North Ridge Consulting.
Federal teams moved immediately.
I was ordered to remain with Lily.
I obeyed.
That decision was harder than entering the operation.
For years, my first instinct was to move toward danger because action felt like control.
Now my daughter needed me to stay.
Marcus sent updates.
Outer gate breached.
Two suspects detained.
Underground access found.
Then the communication stopped.
Five minutes passed.
Ten.
A new signal appeared on the tracker.
The music-box chip was moving.
A vehicle exited through a private mountain road before the tactical perimeter closed.
Peter had escaped.
He took one hostage.
Vanessa Vale.
The detention transfer vehicle carrying her to a federal interview had been attacked that afternoon.
The public had not been informed.
Peter now had the woman who knew every North Ridge account.
He also had the only witness capable of proving Grant had been recruited before my assignment.
Vanessa’s disappearance gave Grant a new defense.
His attorney immediately claimed she had invented the entire operation and fled.
Grant requested emergency custody access to Lily.
He argued that I was using federal power to alienate him from his child.
The hearing was scheduled for the next morning.

Peter had not called only to threaten me.
He had timed the escape to rebuild Grant’s story.
