Chapter 8 - VANESSA’S RECORDING

Peter abandoned Vanessa inside a mountain maintenance cabin.
Search teams found her eighteen hours later.
She was dehydrated, bruised, and furious.
She agreed to cooperate without conditions.
Not because she had developed morality.
Because Peter had tried to kill her.
Her first interview lasted six hours.
She explained how North Ridge selected Grant.
They studied spouses of defense executives.
Grant’s social media showed private planes, charity dinners, and luxury homes.
He presented everything as his.
North Ridge assumed he controlled the assets.
Vanessa approached him at a conference.
She praised his leadership.
She asked technical questions he could not answer.
Instead of admitting ignorance, he gave her documents.
Each secret made him feel important.
Each payment made him dependent.
When Vanessa learned I held the controlling interests, she changed the plan.
The affair became public inside the house.
The legal attack began.
Lily was supposed to become attached to Vanessa.
Vanessa bought toys, dresses, and sweets during the first week.
Lily refused them.
She asked for me.
She asked for Mrs. Bell.
She told Vanessa she was not family.
The rejection enraged her.
Grant initially objected to punishment.
Then Vanessa reminded him that Lily’s testimony could determine custody.
He began helping.
“Did Grant ever hit Lily?” Marcus asked.
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
“He grabbed her.”
“He pushed her.”
“He locked her in rooms.”
“Did he know you hurt her?”
“Yes.”
“Did he see the bruises?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he stop you?”
“Because I told him discipline would make her say Evelyn frightened her.”
Vanessa produced a hidden recording from her phone.
Grant’s voice was clear.
“If Lily tells the evaluator Evelyn abandoned her, the court gives me control.”
Vanessa answered.
“And if she stays silent?”
“Silence looks traumatized.”
“We say Evelyn caused it.”
The recording continued.
Grant discussed the companies.
The assets.
The trust.
Then he said the sentence that destroyed any claim of manipulation.
“Once Evelyn is declared unstable, everything becomes mine.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Including me?”
Grant answered.
“You are the reward.”
Vanessa stopped the recording.
“I believed him.”
I looked at her.
“You believed a man planning to steal from his wife would be loyal to you?”
Her eyes hardened.
“I was not asking for judgment.”
“You abused my daughter.”
“You do not get to control the tone of my response.”
She looked away.
The interview moved to Peter.
He controlled government information.
He chose my mission.
He arranged the border ambush.
He planned to steal the encryption keys during my extraction.
When that failed, he shifted to the incapacity strategy.
North Ridge’s final objective was not only Hartwell Defense Logistics.
The company owned a secure satellite communication patent.
The technology could hide trafficking routes from conventional monitoring.
Peter had already sold partial designs.
He needed my biometric authorization to access the final component.
The emergency transmitter in my field jacket contained one half of that biometric signature.
When I entered the house, Vanessa planned to create a physical struggle.
Grant would remove my jacket.
Peter would collect it through a security courier.
Lily’s abuse was not only pressure.
It was bait designed to make me move without caution.
Vanessa expected me to attack her.
Instead, I moved her shoe and lifted my child.
My restraint had disrupted the theft.
For the first time, I understood why she kept provoking me.
“You wanted me to hit you.”
“Yes.”
“The camera would show a federal operative assaulting an unarmed woman.”
“Grant would testify.”
“The psychiatric petition would be filed.”
“And Peter would take your jacket as evidence.”
I looked toward Marcus.
The field jacket remained in federal storage.
The biometric system was safe.
A small decision inside the living room had protected more than my legal case.
It had protected the technology.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
She had expected that realization to frighten me.
Instead, it gave me clarity.
May you like
My daughter had been placed beneath a red heel to provoke a mistake.
I would not give them one.
