Chapter 2 - THE PEOPLE GRANT DID NOT EXPECT

The first vehicle stopped beneath the front portico.

Four federal agents stepped out.

Grant’s smile disappeared.

Special Agent Marcus Reed entered first.

He wore a dark coat and carried no visible weapon.

He did not need one.

Two agents moved toward the side entrances.

A woman in a gray suit followed him.

Her name was Dr. Natalie Chen.

She specialized in interviewing children who had experienced trauma.

Grant stared at them.

“What is this?”

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at the bruises on her arms.

His expression hardened.

“Evelyn’s emergency transmitter activated.”

“This is a private domestic dispute,” Grant said.

Marcus turned toward him.

“There is an injured child in the room.”

Vanessa pulled the robe tighter.

“She fell.”

Lily’s fingers tightened behind my neck.

Marcus noticed.

“Who are you?”

“Vanessa Vale.”

“And why are you wearing Mr. Carlisle’s robe inside Mrs. Carlisle’s house?”

Vanessa looked toward Grant.

He answered for her.

“She is a guest.”

Marcus glanced at the champagne, the bare feet, and the red stiletto beside the cleaning rag.

“An unusually comfortable guest.”

Grant moved toward me.

“Evelyn is exhausted.”

“She returned from a dangerous assignment.”

“She is not thinking clearly.”

Marcus held up one hand.

“Do not approach her.”

“This is my wife.”

“That does not give you unrestricted access to her body.”

Grant’s face reddened.

Dr. Chen moved slowly toward Lily.

“Hi.”

“My name is Natalie.”

“You do not have to speak.”

Lily lifted her eyes but did not leave my shoulder.

Dr. Chen continued gently.

“Can you show me where it hurts?”

Lily’s gaze moved toward her hand.

Then her stomach.

Then the hallway.

Grant saw the final movement.

“She is tired.”

Dr. Chen did not look at him.

“I was speaking to Lily.”

Vanessa stepped toward the sofa.

“I need my purse.”

One of the agents blocked her.

“Stay where you are.”

“This is outrageous.”

Marcus looked toward the ceiling.

A security camera was mounted near the staircase.

Its small green light was dark.

“Is that camera functional?”

Grant answered too quickly.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“It was functional when I left.”

“The system malfunctioned.”

“When?”

“Several weeks ago.”

I shifted Lily into Marcus’s care long enough to remove a small device from my duffel bag.

It resembled a portable radio.

In reality, it connected to the secure residential server operated by my holding company.

I opened the camera dashboard.

The hallway camera had been disconnected manually twenty-two days earlier.

The living room camera remained online.

So did two exterior cameras and a hidden nursery camera installed after a break-in attempt the previous year.

Grant stared at the screen.

“You had hidden cameras?”

“I had security cameras in my house.”

“You recorded us without consent.”

“You knew the system existed.”

Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.

Fear entered her face.

I opened the living room archive.

The first available clip showed Vanessa entering the house with three suitcases.

Grant kissed her beneath the birthday banner Lily and I had chosen together.

The date was six days after my deployment began.

The next clip showed Mrs. Bell confronting Grant.

“You cannot bring that woman here.”

“This is Lily’s home.”

Grant pointed toward the door.

“You are fired.”

Mrs. Bell refused to leave without Lily.

Vanessa called security.

The security officers belonged to Carlisle Protective Services.

A company Grant claimed he owned.

In reality, the company belonged to my holding group.

Two guards physically removed Mrs. Bell while Lily screamed.

The video continued.

Days of shouting.

Locked doors.

Missed meals.

Vanessa taking Lily’s tablet.

Grant telling his daughter that her mother had chosen work over her.

Then the footage reached the moment Lily stopped speaking.

She stood near the stairs holding a small framed photograph of me.

Vanessa snatched it away.

Lily reached for it.

Grant grabbed her arm.

“You will stop embarrassing us.”

Vanessa raised the frame.

She smashed it against the wall.

Glass scattered.

Lily screamed.

Grant slapped his hand over her mouth.

“Enough.”

Lily bit him.

He pushed her backward.

She struck the stair rail and fell three steps.

The child on the screen began crying.

Then Vanessa leaned close.

“If you tell anyone, your mommy will never come back.”

Lily stopped making sound.

In the living room, Grant’s face had become white.

“That is edited.”

The archive displayed a verified encryption seal.

The footage could not be altered without breaking the signature.

Marcus looked toward the agents.

“Detain them.”

Grant backed away.

“You work for me.”

One of the security officers almost laughed.

Marcus answered.

“No.”

“We work for the United States government.”

“And the private agents outside work for Evelyn.”

The distinction finally reached him.

Grant had spent years believing everything near me belonged to him.

My work.

My house.

My company.

May you like

My silence.

Now men he assumed were his employees placed him in handcuffs.
