Chapter 6 - The First Photograph

The slideshow began exactly as everyone expected.

Our wedding.

Ryan laughing beneath falling rose petals.

Our honeymoon in Italy.

Christmas at the estate.

The first ultrasound.

My parents smiled.

Margaret wiped at her eyes.

Ryan relaxed slightly.

Then came our first miscarriage.

Not photographs from the hospital.

Just a white candle.

The words beneath it read:

THE CHILD WE LOVED BEFORE WE MET.

The garden became silent.

The next image was another candle.

Our second loss.

Ryan’s hand found mine automatically.

I let him hold it.

The next photograph showed our current daughter’s ultrasound.

Applause broke out again.

Ryan smiled.

Then the screen went black.

White letters appeared.

TRUST.

Ryan’s hand left mine.

The next image was a screenshot.

Thank you for checking in. Executive Suite 402. Langham Chicago.

A murmur moved through the garden.

Margaret stopped breathing.

Sabrina’s face went blank.

The next slide showed the booking details.

Guests: Ryan Whitmore and Sabrina Cole.

Someone gasped.

My mother covered her mouth.

Ryan stood.

“Turn this off.”

Nobody moved.

The next photograph appeared.

Sabrina beside the pool in Miami.

Then Napa.

Then New York.

Dates appeared beneath each one.

Every date matched a “business trip.”

Ryan walked toward the projector table.

Charles Whitmore’s voice stopped him.

“Sit down.”

Ryan froze.

His grandfather rarely raised his voice.

He did not need to.

The next slide showed a screenshot of Ryan’s message.

After the baby comes, Claire will be too overwhelmed to fight.

Someone whispered, “Oh my God.”

Sabrina stood.

“I didn’t write that.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

I pressed the remote.

“Ryan did.”

The next message appeared.

And the Whitmore trust?

Sabrina’s words.

Then Ryan’s response.

Once my daughter is born, the distribution changes.

Charles stood slowly.

Ryan’s face turned gray.

“Grandpa, I can explain.”

Charles looked at the screen.

Then at his grandson.

“Can you?”

Nobody spoke.

I clicked again.

The final slide was not a screenshot.

It was video.

The hotel hallway.

Ryan opening Suite 402.

Me standing outside.

Sabrina behind him in a silk robe.

Then her voice filled the garden.

You told me she knew.

The screen froze.

Every guest stared at Ryan.

But the slideshow was not finished.

May you like

Because Sabrina had told me one thing at the hotel she had never intended Ryan’s family to hear.

And I had recorded that too.
