Chapter 12 - The Grief He Calculated

For the first time since Suite 402, I became physically ill.

I barely reached the bathroom.

Margaret found me sitting on the tile floor afterward.

She did not ask what happened.

I handed her my phone.

She read the message.

Then sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Eventually, she whispered, “I’m so sorry.”

I stared at the wall.

After my second miscarriage, Ryan had slept beside me for three nights because I woke crying.

He made soup.

He canceled meetings.

He told me there was no timeline.

He said we would only try again when I was ready.

Then he told Sabrina something different.

We had to try again.

Because money was waiting for a living heir.

I pressed both hands over my daughter.

“Was any of it real?”

Margaret looked at me.

“Your baby is.”

That saved me.

Not the marriage.

Not the memories.

The child.

My daughter was real.

My love for her was real.

Whatever Ryan had calculated did not contaminate her existence.

The next morning, Evelyn advised me not to release the miscarriage message publicly.

“I don’t want to.”

“Good.”

“This isn’t entertainment.”

That was the distinction Ryan never understood.

The slideshow had not been revenge.

It had been protection against the story he would have told if confronted privately.

Now the room was smaller.

Lawyers.

Documents.

Consequences.

Ryan requested mediation.

I agreed.

He entered wearing navy blue.

The suit from our first anniversary dinner.

Maybe intentional.

Maybe not.

He looked thinner.

“Claire.”

I said nothing.

He sat across from me.

“I was angry when I wrote that.”

“You wrote it a week after we lost our baby.”

“I was devastated too.”

“You told your mistress we needed to try again because of money.”

He closed his eyes.

“That’s not the whole truth.”

“What is?”

“I wanted a child.”

“Then why mention the trust?”

“Because everything was tangled together.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“You tangled it.”

His voice broke.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

He looked shocked.

Maybe was worse than no.

I continued.

“But loving someone does not erase using them.”

He looked toward Evelyn.

Then back at me.

“I’ll give you the house.”

“It isn’t yours to give.”

“I’ll walk away from Northstar.”

“That’s not mine either.”

“What do you want?”

I looked at him.

“The truth.”

May you like

His face changed.

And I understood Ryan would give up money long before he voluntarily gave up the story he told about himself.
