Chapter 11 - The Threat

I did not answer immediately.
Ryan mistook my silence for fear.
“You travel.”
“So do you.”
“You work long hours.”
“So do you.”
“My family can give her stability.”
“Your family?”
I looked at Margaret, who was sitting beside me.
She held out her hand.
I put the phone on speaker.
Ryan continued.
“I’m her father.”
Margaret leaned toward the phone.
“And Claire is her mother.”
Silence.
“Mom?”
“Yes.”
“What are you doing with her?”
“Standing where you should have stood.”
Ryan exhaled.
“This doesn’t concern you.”
“You made it concern me when you planned to use my granddaughter’s birth as a financial deadline.”
“Mom, that’s not what happened.”
“Then explain Northstar.”
Silence.
Margaret’s face changed.
“You thought we didn’t know.”
Ryan disconnected.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Can he take her?”
“No court can guarantee outcomes.”
She spoke carefully.
“But threatening full custody because you discovered an affair is not a strong beginning.”
“I want everything documented.”
“It will be.”
I spent the next week preparing.
Not for revenge.
For reality.
I moved my personal income into an individual account.
I froze joint discretionary transfers.
I copied medical records.
I documented Ryan’s travel schedule.
I preserved every message.
Then I filed for divorce.
Ryan was served at Whitmore Development headquarters.
By noon, he had hired one of Chicago’s most aggressive divorce attorneys.
By three, his attorney accused me of “publicly humiliating” Ryan during a fragile emotional period.
By five, my attorney sent the hotel recording.
The accusation disappeared from the next letter.
Sabrina contacted me that night.
I almost ignored her.
Then I answered.
“What?”
“I found something.”
“What?”
“A message from Ryan.”
“You have many.”
“This one is about your miscarriages.”
The room disappeared around me.
“What did he say?”
Sabrina hesitated.
“I think you need to read it yourself.”
She forwarded a screenshot.
It was dated fourteen months earlier.
A week after my second miscarriage.
Ryan had written:
We have to try again.
Sabrina replied:
Why?
Ryan answered:

Because without a living heir, Grandpa never releases the principal.
I stopped breathing.
