Chapter 4 - The Perfect Husband Returns

By ten o’clock, the Whitmore estate looked like a magazine spread.

White roses lined the terrace.

Gold ribbons moved in the breeze.

A string quartet tuned their instruments beneath the garden canopy.

Pink macarons stood in perfect towers beside tiny cards bearing our daughter’s initials.

Margaret supervised everything.

She had no idea her son’s marriage was already over.

Ryan showered.

Shaved.

Changed into a pale gray suit.

Then he performed.

He carried flower boxes.

He thanked the caterers.

He kissed my cheek whenever someone entered the room.

Every gesture was designed for witnesses.

I let him.

At ten forty-five, he cornered me in the upstairs hall.

“You invited Sabrina.”

“Yes.”

His face lost color.

“She texted me.”

“Good.”

“What the hell are you doing?”

“I thought she should be included.”

“In our baby shower?”

“You introduced her at the hotel as your wife.”

His eyes flicked toward the staircase.

“Keep your voice down.”

I almost smiled.

“You seem much more worried about people hearing the truth than about the truth itself.”

He grabbed my wrist.

Not hard.

But hard enough.

I looked down at his hand.

Then back at him.

He released me immediately.

“Claire, I made a mistake.”

“A three-year mistake?”

His face changed.

I had guessed.

He knew it.

“How much do you know?”

“Enough.”

“About Sabrina?”

“Enough.”

“About the trust?”

That was the first time he made a real mistake.

He saw it in my face.

I had not mentioned the trust.

Neither had Sabrina.

Ryan went completely still.

I leaned closer.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For confirming there’s more.”

He swore under his breath.

Then Margaret called from downstairs.

“Ryan, darling, the photographer is here.”

He closed his eyes.

I stepped away.

“At noon, smile.”

“Claire.”

“You’ve practiced for years.”

I walked downstairs.

At eleven twenty, Sabrina arrived.

She wore a cream dress.

Pearl earrings.

And the same calm smile she had worn in Suite 402.

Margaret saw her from across the foyer.

The flower arrangement slipped from her hands.

“Sabrina?”

The room began to quiet.

Sabrina looked at me.

I walked toward her and embraced her.

Everyone stared.

“Thank you for coming.”

She whispered beside my ear.

“You’re insane.”

I whispered back.

“No.”

I smiled toward the gathering relatives.

“I’m finally paying attention.”

May you like

Then I noticed Ryan standing behind Margaret.

For the first time all morning, he looked afraid.
