Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER WHO STOPPED SEARCHING

Malcolm Crawford had spent thirty years telling reporters that losing his niece destroyed the family.

Claire watched old interviews from her hospital bed.

In one, Malcolm stood beside Eleanor during a candlelight vigil.

He looked devastated.

In another, he announced a million-dollar reward.

In another, he begged anyone with information to call police.

Eleanor sat in silence while the videos played.

“He was my younger brother.”

Claire looked at her.

“Was?”

Eleanor’s mouth tightened.

“We haven’t been close for years.”

“Why?”

“Business.”

“That answer means you don’t want to tell me.”

Eleanor looked at her daughter.

“You’re very direct.”

“I had to become that way.”

Eleanor nodded.

Then she told the truth.

“Your grandfather did not trust Malcolm.”

“Why?”

“He spent money recklessly.”

“He made deals without authorization.”

“He believed Crawford International should belong to him because he was the only son.”

“But you inherited control.”

“Yes.”

“And when I disappeared?”

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“You were my only child.”

Claire understood.

“If I was declared dead, what happened to my inheritance?”

Naomi answered.

“Your contingent interests would have eventually shifted.”

“To Malcolm?”

“Partially.”

Claire looked back at the old video.

Malcolm was crying beside Eleanor.

For the first time, his tears looked different.

Naomi opened the files from Vanessa’s flash drive on an isolated computer.

Most were financial records.

Several were emails between Diana Sterling and Malcolm Crawford.

The oldest dated back to 1998.

They were careful.

No names.

No direct admissions.

But one sentence appeared repeatedly.

THE WISCONSIN MATTER REMAINS QUIET.

Then came the 1999 email.

THE GIRL IS STILL THERE.

M.C. RESPONSE: THEN LEAVE IT THAT WAY.

Claire read it three times.

Eleanor stood abruptly.

“I’m going to kill him.”

Naomi looked up.

“No, you’re going to let me call federal investigators.”

Eleanor paced.

“He knew.”

“We don’t know exactly what he knew.”

“He knew she was alive.”

“We can prove he received a message.”

“We cannot yet prove he understood who ‘the girl’ was.”

Eleanor slammed her palm against the table.

“I knew my brother.”

“Then help us prove it.”

Claire watched them.

Strangely, she was calmer than both.

Maybe because Malcolm Crawford was still a stranger to her.

Richard was not.

Diana was not.

Those betrayals hurt more.

“Why would Diana Sterling be involved?”

Eleanor stopped.

“I don’t know.”

Claire studied her.

“You’re lying.”

Eleanor sat down slowly.

“Diana’s father worked for Crawford International.”

“In what position?”

“Head of corporate security.”

Claire felt cold.

“When I disappeared?”

“Yes.”

The silence became unbearable.

“His name?”

“Arthur Vale.”

Claire repeated it.

“Arthur Vale.”

“He supervised the private search after police reduced their task force.”

“So Diana’s father had access to everything.”

“Yes.”

“Search reports.”

“Yes.”

“Leads.”

“Yes.”

“Witnesses.”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at Naomi.

“And years later, Diana’s son married me.”

Nobody needed to explain how impossible that coincidence felt.

Claire reached for her phone.

She opened years of family photographs.

There was Diana at the wedding.

Diana at Christmas.

Diana holding Claire’s baby shower invitation.

Diana smiling while Claire showed everyone the ultrasound.

Then Claire found a photograph taken two years earlier.

She was standing beside Diana at a charity luncheon.

The bracelet was clearly visible.

Diana was not looking at the camera.

She was staring directly at Claire’s wrist.

Claire zoomed in.

Diana’s expression was unmistakable.

Shock.

Fear.

Recognition.

Claire showed the photograph to Eleanor.

Eleanor whispered.

“She knew.”

Then Naomi’s phone rang.

She listened for less than thirty seconds.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Eleanor asked.

Naomi ended the call.

“Malcolm Crawford just requested an emergency meeting of the Crawford International board.”

“Why?”

“He says Eleanor has suffered an emotional breakdown.”

Claire stared.

Naomi continued.

“And he intends to challenge any attempt to recognize Claire as a Crawford heir.”

Malcolm was not hiding anymore.

He was preparing for war.
