Chapter 14 - THE HEARING

The courthouse steps were covered in reporters.

Claire entered through a secured side entrance.

She wore a simple cream maternity dress.

The silver bracelet remained on her wrist.

Eleanor walked beside her.

Naomi walked ahead.

Richard was already inside.

He looked exhausted.

For the first time since Claire had known him, his suit could not hide what was happening to his life.

Sterling Maritime had suspended him indefinitely.

Two banks had frozen accounts connected to his shell company.

Vanessa had agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Diana had entered negotiations with prosecutors.

Malcolm sat behind Richard.

Seeing them together made Claire’s stomach tighten.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

Richard’s attorney spoke first.

He painted Claire as emotionally vulnerable.

Recently overwhelmed by sudden wealth.

Manipulated by Eleanor.

Pregnant.

Stressed.

Confused.

Claire listened.

Then Naomi stood.

She did not raise her voice.

She simply presented facts.

Two independent DNA tests.

Documented chain of custody.

Hospital records.

The bracelet.

Photographs from 1996.

St. Agnes records.

William Crawford’s letter.

Financial transfers between Malcolm and Richard.

Richard’s attempt to alter Claire’s marital property rights.

His payment linked to the laboratory bribery attempt.

Then Naomi played the phone recording.

Claire’s voice filled the courtroom.

“Were you paid to marry me?”

Richard’s answer followed.

“It wasn’t like that.”

Then later.

“I met you because my mother asked me to.”

Richard closed his eyes.

His attorney stopped taking notes.

The judge looked at him for several seconds.

Then came Vanessa.

Richard visibly flinched when she entered.

Vanessa testified that Richard had discussed Claire’s identity before the hotel incident.

She described the secret accounts.

The transfers.

The research.

The conversation with Diana.

Then she produced messages.

Richard had written.

IF CLAIRE FINDS OUT BEFORE THE TRUST IS SECURED, WE LOSE EVERYTHING.

Naomi asked.

“Who is ‘we’?”

Vanessa looked at Richard.

“Richard and Malcolm.”

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

The judge called for silence.

Richard leaned toward his attorney.

His face had become gray.

Then Diana Sterling entered under subpoena.

Claire did not look away.

Diana admitted she knew Claire’s identity.

She admitted Malcolm paid her family for silence.

She admitted Richard learned the truth before marrying Claire.

Richard whispered.

“Mom.”

Diana closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Richard’s expression shattered.

Not because he regretted hurting Claire.

Because his own mother had stopped protecting him.

After four hours, the judge ruled.

Richard’s request for conservatorship was denied.

His attempt to restrict Claire’s movements was denied.

A temporary protective order was issued.

All disputed marital assets were frozen pending forensic review.

The judge also referred portions of the record to federal prosecutors.

Malcolm left before the ruling was finished.

Claire watched him go.

Something about his expression worried her.

He was not defeated.

He was calculating.

Outside the courtroom, Richard tried to approach Claire.

Security blocked him.

“Claire.”

She kept walking.

“I did love you.”

She stopped.

For one moment, the hallway became silent.

Claire turned.

“Maybe you did.”

Richard’s eyes filled with hope.

Then Claire continued.

“But every time loving me cost you something, you chose yourself.”

His face fell.

“That isn’t love I can build a life on.”

Claire walked away.

At the elevator, Naomi’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed immediately.

“What?”

Claire asked.

Naomi looked toward Eleanor.

“Malcolm didn’t go home.”

“Where did he go?”

“Crawford International headquarters.”

Eleanor frowned.

Naomi continued.

“He’s called an emergency board vote.”

“To do what?”

Naomi’s face hardened.

“To remove Eleanor before federal agents can freeze his authority.”

Claire glanced at the clock.

May you like

The vote was scheduled for six.

It was already five twelve.
