Chapter 11 - THE MARRIAGE THAT WAS NEVER AN ACCIDENT

Claire remembered the night she met Richard.
A charity reception.
A spilled glass of champagne.
A joke about terrible catering.
He had seemed charming because he was not trying too hard.
At least that was what she believed.
Now investigators reconstructed the truth.
Richard had purchased a ticket to the reception forty-eight hours after Diana Sterling learned Claire would attend.
He had asked a mutual acquaintance for an introduction.
He had requested Claire’s employment information before their first date.
He had searched St. Agnes Children’s Home eleven times during the first month of their relationship.
Claire sat at Eleanor’s dining table while Naomi laid out the timeline.
“Why marry me?”
Claire asked.
Naomi hesitated.
Eleanor answered.
“Control.”
Claire looked at her.
“If Malcolm believed you could eventually be identified, keeping you close to someone he trusted would help him monitor you.”
“And Richard agreed?”
“For money.”
Naomi slid another record across the table.
Malcolm had invested five million dollars into Sterling Maritime two months after Richard proposed.
Claire laughed bitterly.
“My engagement present.”
No one laughed with her.
There was more.
A second investment came after the wedding.
A third after Claire became pregnant.
Malcolm had been financing Richard’s family for years.
Claire stared at the documents.
“Does Richard love me?”
Eleanor did not answer.
Claire looked at Naomi.
Naomi did not answer either.
That hurt more than she expected.
Late that afternoon, Richard called from a blocked number.
Claire answered.
“Were you paid to marry me?”
Silence.
Then Richard said.
“It wasn’t like that.”
Her eyes closed.
That was the closest thing to a confession she needed.
“How was it?”
“I met you because my mother asked me to.”
“Why?”
“She said you were connected to a family business matter.”
“Did you know I was a Crawford?”
“Not at first.”
“When did you know?”
“After we were married.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“And you stayed.”
“I loved you.”
“You investigated me.”
“I was protecting you.”
“You stole from me.”
“I was protecting us.”
“You slept with Vanessa.”
Richard exhaled.
“That was a mistake.”
“Eleven months is not a mistake.”
“Claire, listen.”
“No.”
“You listen.”
Her voice remained steady.
“You knew I spent my childhood believing no one wanted me.”
“You knew I searched for my biological family.”
“You watched me cry every birthday because I wondered whether someone remembered me.”
Richard said nothing.
“And all that time, your mother knew.”
Silence.
“All that time, Malcolm knew.”
Silence.
“And eventually, you knew.”
Richard finally whispered.
“Yes.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Malcolm said it would destroy everything.”
“For whom?”
Richard did not answer.
Claire understood.
For Malcolm.
For Diana.
For Richard.
Not for Claire.
Never for Claire.
“You are never coming near me again unless a court requires it.”
“Claire.”
“You will communicate through Naomi.”
“We’re having a child.”
“My daughter will know who you are.”
Richard’s voice changed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I’m not going to lie to her.”
“You can’t keep my child from me.”
“That will be decided legally.”
He became angry.
“You think Eleanor can buy a judge?”
Claire almost smiled.
“No.”
“But I think your recorded confession is going to interest mine.”
Richard went silent.
Claire looked at the recording app Naomi had activated before the call.
“Goodbye, Richard.”
She hung up.
For the first time since the Grand Belmont lobby, Claire felt something that resembled control.
Then Eleanor’s security chief entered.
His face was tense.
“Mrs. Crawford.”
“What?”
“Diana Sterling is downstairs.”
Claire turned.
“She came here?”
“Yes.”
“What does she want?”
May you like
The security chief looked directly at Claire.
“She says she knows who physically took Claire from the lake house.”
