Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT CLAIRE BECAME A MOTHER

Claire’s contractions were six minutes apart by the time they reached the hospital.

Her doctor was not happy.

“You were supposed to avoid stress.”

Claire laughed through a contraction.

“I’ll tell my kidnapped-child billionaire-family conspiracy to reschedule.”

Even the nurse smiled.

Eleanor did not.

She looked terrified.

Claire noticed.

“Mom.”

It was the first time Claire had called her that.

Eleanor froze.

Claire barely realized she had said it.

Then another contraction hit.

Eleanor moved beside her immediately.

“I’m here.”

Those two words mattered.

Richard was notified because he was the baby’s father.

He arrived at the hospital an hour later.

The protective order prevented him from entering Claire’s room.

He remained downstairs with his attorney.

Claire expected to feel angry.

Instead, she felt sad.

There had been a time she wanted him beside her more than anyone.

That version of their life was gone.

At 2:18 a.m., after nine exhausting hours, Claire gave birth to a daughter.

Six pounds.

Four ounces.

A furious cry.

Ten perfect fingers.

Claire held the baby against her chest and began sobbing.

Eleanor stood beside the bed.

She was crying too.

“What’s her name?”

Claire looked down.

She had chosen it months earlier.

Richard had disliked it.

Now his opinion no longer mattered.

“Hope.”

Eleanor smiled through tears.

“Hope Crawford Sterling?”

Claire paused.

Then shook her head.

“Hope Claire Crawford.”

Eleanor stared at her.

Claire smiled faintly.

“I’m filing the name legally.”

Eleanor touched the baby’s tiny hand.

“Welcome home, Hope.”

Hours later, Naomi arrived.

She carried news.

Malcolm had been formally charged with several financial offenses.

Additional charges connected to Claire’s disappearance were under review.

Diana’s testimony had been corroborated by old bank records.

Arthur Vale had died years earlier.

But his files had survived.

Investigators had found payments.

Travel records.

And photographs.

Richard was not yet charged in connection with the kidnapping.

He had been a child when Claire disappeared.

But his later conduct created different problems.

Fraud.

Attempted asset concealment.

Witness interference.

Bribery.

Naomi sat beside Claire.

“There’s also something you need to know.”

Claire looked at Hope.

“Tell me.”

“Richard has requested to establish paternity and visitation.”

Eleanor stiffened.

Claire remained calm.

“That’s his legal right.”

Naomi nodded.

“Correct.”

“I won’t use money to erase her father.”

Eleanor looked surprised.

Claire continued.

“But I will use every piece of evidence necessary to make sure she is safe.”

Naomi smiled slightly.

“That is exactly the position I hoped you’d take.”

Later, Claire allowed Richard to see Hope through the nursery glass.

He stood on the other side.

His face crumpled when he saw his daughter.

For one moment, Claire saw the man she had once loved.

Richard placed his palm against the glass.

Claire did not approach.

He looked at her.

Then mouthed.

I’m sorry.

Claire looked down at Hope.

She did not respond.

Some apologies came too late to repair what they named.

The next morning, Eleanor returned to Malcolm’s final words.

“Claire.”

“I owe you an explanation.”

Claire looked at her.

“About the trust?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor sat.

“Your grandfather changed it because he discovered Malcolm was stealing from the company.”

“That part I understand.”

“There’s more.”

Claire waited.

Eleanor looked toward Hope.

“Your grandfather didn’t simply make you an heir.”

“He made you the controlling heir.”

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor answered.

“When certain conditions are satisfied, you will control more Crawford voting shares than I do.”

Claire stared at her mother.

“Malcolm wasn’t trying to steal six hundred million dollars.”

May you like

Eleanor shook her head.

“He was trying to prevent you from one day controlling the entire Crawford empire.”
