The house became quiet after the trial.
At first, the silence felt like another loss.
Then it began feeling like space.
I converted Melissa’s studio back into Evelyn’s sewing room.
I donated the filming equipment to a community media program.
I kept one camera.
Not for surveillance.
For family history.
I recorded stories about Evelyn.
How we met at a bus stop.
How she repaired the first factory’s accounting system.
How she once fired me from my own company for ignoring safety procedures.
I sent the recordings to Brian through his counselor.
He watched them.
His first letter from prison was short.
I forgot Mom was part of everything too.
The second letter was longer.
He described therapy.
He admitted that every gift from me had felt like proof he was safe.
When the possibility of losing the gifts appeared, he became willing to harm the person giving them.
I wrote back.
Understanding is not the same as changing.
Keep going.
The independent board sold Brian’s failed company assets.
The sale repaid employees before creditors.
Several workers wrote to thank me.
I told them I had only corrected something my family caused.
The Hayes Family Trust was restructured.
No beneficiary would receive unrestricted distributions based only on blood.
Education, health care, and reasonable housing could be supported.
Luxury spending would not.
