Chapter 15 - THE TRIAL

The trial began nine months after my birthday.
The prosecution played the dog-bowl video first.
I watched myself sitting beneath the chandelier.
I watched Brian place the bowl before me.
I heard the laughter again.
It sounded smaller inside the courtroom.
Less powerful.
Then the prosecutor played Melissa’s rehearsal.
The cruelty became organized.
Dr. Cole testified that he signed the preliminary declaration without examining me.
Noah testified about edited videos.
Claire explained the trust structure and forged documents.
Then I took the stand.
Melissa’s attorney approached.
“Mr. Hayes, you were angry after the birthday party.”
“Yes.”
“You immediately cut off your son financially.”
“I removed unauthorized access and suspended discretionary gifts.”
“You evicted him.”
“I provided thirty days’ notice.”
“You preserved a dog bowl as evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Would a reasonable person consider that obsessive?”
I looked toward the jury.
“A reasonable person might preserve the object used in a filmed coercion plan.”
The attorney changed direction.
“Did you ever tell Brian the full extent of your financial support?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I believed generosity should not be announced.”
“Then how could he know his lifestyle depended on you?”
“He signed annual trust statements.”
“Did he read them?”
“That was his responsibility.”
The phrase echoed through the courtroom.
Read every page.
Understand every account.
Do not confuse access with ownership.
The jury found Melissa guilty on every major charge.
Brian had pleaded guilty before trial.
His cooperation reduced his sentence.
It did not remove it.
Melissa looked toward her phone as officers led her away.
There was no phone waiting.

No audience she controlled.
Only consequences.
