Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT THEY RAN
Brian and Melissa packed after midnight.
A driveway camera recorded them carrying suitcases toward Melissa’s car.
The car would not start.
The lease company had remotely disabled it after the payment guarantee was withdrawn.
Brian kicked the tire.
Melissa threw her suitcase against the trunk.
Then a rideshare vehicle arrived.
They attempted to leave with two laptops, Evelyn’s jewelry case, and several folders from my study.
The security officers stopped them at the gate.
Brian called me.
“Tell them to move.”
“What are you carrying?”
“Our belongings.”
“Evelyn’s jewelry belongs to the family trust.”
“Mom wanted Melissa to have it.”
“Your mother met Melissa twice.”
Brian became silent.
“What about the laptops?” I asked.
“They are mine.”
“Serial numbers say otherwise.”
He lowered his voice.
“Dad, please.”
It was the first time he had used the word without anger.
I walked to the gate.
Melissa stood beside the suitcases wearing a designer coat purchased on my card.
Brian looked exhausted.
“We need somewhere to go.”
“You have thirty days inside the guest wing.”
“You froze our money.”
“I froze disputed accounts.”
“You still have personal savings.”
Melissa looked away.
Claire’s audit showed they had less than twelve thousand dollars in personal funds.
They had spent everything as quickly as it arrived.
Brian stepped closer.
“Let us take the jewelry.”
“No.”
“Mom would not want us homeless.”
“Your mother would ask why two healthy adults with expensive educations cannot pay rent.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“You always choose her over me.”
“Evelyn is dead.”
“I am choosing the legal documents she left.”
Melissa whispered something to Brian.
He looked toward the officers.
Then he returned the jewelry case.
One laptop was personal.
They were permitted to take it.
The corporate devices and files remained.
They left in the rideshare vehicle.
The destination was a luxury hotel downtown.
Brian charged the room to an account belonging to his company.
The charge failed.
They spent the night in a cheaper hotel near the airport.
By morning, Melissa had posted a new video.
ELDERLY MILLIONAIRE EVICTS HIS ONLY SON AFTER A BIRTHDAY JOKE.
The video showed her crying inside the hotel room.
Brian sat behind her with his head lowered.
They did not mention the forged loan.
They did not mention the life-insurance change.
They did not mention the competency petition.
