Chapter 14 - MELISSA’S LAST RECORDING
Melissa refused every plea agreement.
She believed the case would increase her audience.
She filmed courthouse arrivals.
She posted crying monologues.
She accused Brian of acting alone.
Then investigators recovered a deleted recording from her phone.
The video had been made the night before my birthday.
Melissa sat inside Evelyn’s chair rehearsing the event.
“Brian will give him the bowl.”
“Walter will either explode or sit there.”
“If he explodes, we show emotional instability.”
“If he sits there, we show dependency.”
“After the clip spreads, Dr. Cole submits the petition.”
“Then Brian becomes temporary guardian.”
She smiled at the camera.
“By the time Walter understands what happened, he will need Brian’s permission to hire a lawyer.”
The recording became the center of the prosecution’s case.
It proved planning.
It proved motive.
It proved the humiliation had been designed to support legal control.
Melissa saw the video in court.
For the first time, she stopped smiling.
Her attorney requested a recess.
Outside, Brian sat alone on a bench.
He had accepted a cooperation agreement that morning.
He would testify about the forged signatures and the content plan.
Melissa approached him.
“You are betraying me.”
He looked at her.
“We betrayed him.”
“You told me you wanted control.”
“I wanted the business saved.”
“You wanted the house.”
“You wanted his accounts.”
“You wanted all of it too.”
Brian did not deny it.
Melissa raised her phone automatically.
A court officer stopped her.
“No recording inside this corridor.”
Without the phone, she appeared uncertain.
For years, a screen had stood between Melissa and the consequences of her behavior.
