Chapter 4: The Final Reckoning

The room fell silent.

Not because anyone was afraid.

Because the outcome had already been decided.

The man looked from the husband...

...to the woman...

...then back again.

Every ounce of arrogance disappeared from his face.

Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth as he slowly raised both hands.

Not in surrender.

In acceptance.

The husband stepped closer.

Every measured step echoed across the marble floor.

His tuxedo remained perfectly pressed.

His breathing perfectly steady.

His voice...

Was quieter than before.

Which somehow made it infinitely more terrifying.

"You're going to leave this house."

He paused.

"You'll get into your car."

Another step.

"And you'll spend the rest of your life pretending this family doesn't exist."

The man's throat tightened.

"If I ever see you within a mile of my wife again..."

The husband didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

"The police will be the least of your problems."

For several long seconds, neither of them moved.

Finally...

The man gave a stiff, reluctant nod.

Without another word, he turned and walked toward the bedroom door.

His footsteps echoed down the grand hallway...

Growing quieter...

Until they disappeared completely.

Only then did the husband allow himself to exhale.

He turned toward his wife.

The strength they'd both clung to for the past ten unbearable minutes finally gave way.

He crossed the room.

She met him halfway.

She buried her face against the shoulder of his tuxedo as his arms wrapped tightly around her.

Neither of them spoke.

They didn't have to.

Bathed in the warm morning light, standing in the center of the immaculate white bedroom, they held each other in absolute silence.

The threat was gone.

The trap had failed.

May you like

And for the first time that day...

They were finally safe.
