Chapter 7 - The Visit From Child Services

At nine the next morning, someone knocked on my door.
I expected Danielle.
Instead, a woman stood on the porch holding an identification badge.
“My name is Alicia Grant.”
She spoke gently.
“I’m with child protective services.”
For one second, I could not move.
Then everything Margaret had threatened became real.
Alicia explained that someone had reported me for violent behavior in front of my daughter.
The caller alleged that I had attacked my husband during a family dinner.
The caller also claimed I suffered from “unpredictable rage episodes.”
I almost laughed.
Margaret had wasted no time.
Rachel stood beside me.
“You should probably know the grandmother struck the child first.”
Alicia nodded.
“That allegation was also mentioned by a second caller.”
“Second caller?”
“Yes.”
The first complaint came shortly after midnight.
The second came at 7:12 a.m.
That caller identified herself.
Tessa Hale.
I looked at Tessa.
She stood in the hallway wearing the same clothes from the night before.
“I called.”
My eyes filled.
She shrugged helplessly.
“I figured Mom was going to weaponize the system.”
“So you told them everything?”
“Yes.”
Alicia asked to see Maisie.
I brought her downstairs.
The red mark on her cheek had faded significantly.
Still, Alicia documented it.
She asked simple questions.
Maisie was too young to explain much.
But when Alicia asked if she wanted to visit Nana, my daughter buried her face against my chest.
“No Nana.”
Those two words destroyed me.
Alicia interviewed me alone.
I admitted striking Evan.
All three times.
“I was furious.”
I told her.
“I should not have done it.”
She studied me carefully.
“You understand that responding to violence with violence can create additional risk for a child?”
“Yes.”
“I need you to say more than yes.”
So I did.
I told her that Maisie deserved to grow up without watching adults use their hands when angry.
I told her what Margaret did was wrong.
I told her what I did was wrong.
And I told her I would never pretend otherwise simply because people online were cheering me for it.
Something softened in Alicia’s expression.
“Thank you.”
After two hours, she left.
She did not remove Maisie.
She did not make promises either.
Before leaving, she said she would interview Evan and Margaret separately.
Twenty minutes later, Danielle arrived.
She had already obtained an emergency court date.
“Evan filed first.”
My stomach dropped.
“For custody?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“At 8:03 this morning.”
“Margaret?”
“Her lawyer filed it for him.”
Danielle placed the petition in front of me.
Evan wanted temporary primary custody of Maisie.
He claimed he feared my “escalating emotional instability.”
Attached were screenshots from the edited video of me slapping him.
No image of Margaret touching Maisie appeared anywhere.
Danielle pointed to the last page.
“There’s another problem.”
I read it.
My heart stopped.
Evan had asked the court for permission to stay with Maisie at Margaret’s house.
The same house where Margaret had struck her.
I looked at Danielle.
“He wants to take her there?”
“He signed the petition.”
I stared at Evan’s signature.
Not forged.
Not copied.
Real.

My husband had chosen.
And this time, there was no mother standing beside him forcing his hand.
