Chapter 5 - Seven Videos

The first video was from Christmas.

The second was from a Sunday lunch in February.

Margaret was sitting beside Maisie’s high chair.

Maisie dropped a spoon.

Margaret slapped the table hard enough to make her jump.

“Pick it up.”

Maisie stared at her.

Margaret repeated herself.

My daughter was barely twenty months old.

The third video came from a family barbecue.

Margaret complained that Maisie was crying too loudly.

Evan carried Maisie outside.

That was the version I remembered.

What I did not know was that five minutes before I entered the room, Margaret had deliberately taken away the stuffed rabbit Maisie used for comfort and laughed when she became upset.

The fourth recording was mostly audio.

Margaret told Evan that I was turning Maisie against her.

Evan replied, “Claire babies her too much.”

The fifth showed Margaret yanking a toy from Maisie’s hand.

The sixth showed Evan ignoring his mother’s insults toward me while I was upstairs.

The seventh was different.

It had nothing to do with Maisie.

It was recorded two months earlier.

Margaret and Evan sat at the dining room table.

There were bank documents between them.

I leaned toward the screen.

“What is that?”

Tessa hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Evan pointed at one page.

Margaret said, “She doesn’t need to know until everything is transferred.”

My heart stopped.

Transferred.

I grabbed my laptop.

Within five minutes, I was inside our joint banking account.

At first, nothing looked wrong.

Then I opened the history.

Small transfers appeared every month.

Two thousand.

Three thousand.

Sometimes five.

They were labeled FAMILY INVESTMENT.

I had seen them before.

Evan told me they went into the retirement account managed by his mother’s financial adviser.

I trusted him.

I clicked deeper.

The destination was not our retirement account.

It was an LLC.

HALE LEGACY MANAGEMENT.

Rachel leaned over my shoulder.

“Who owns that?”

“I don’t know.”

Tessa looked sick.

“I do.”

We turned toward her.

“Mom.”

My mouth went dry.

I began adding numbers.

The transfers stretched across twenty-six months.

By the time I finished, the total was $84,600.

Money from the account where my paycheck was deposited.

Money I believed belonged to my family.

Money Evan had quietly routed to his mother.

Rachel whispered, “Claire.”

I barely heard her.

I opened another tab.

Our daughter’s education account.

The balance should have been around thirty thousand dollars.

It showed $4,211.

“No.”

I refreshed it.

Same number.

I searched transaction history.

There were withdrawals.

Seven of them.

All authorized under Evan’s credentials.

I covered my mouth.

Tessa stared at the screen.

“Oh my God.”

The largest transfer had happened six weeks earlier.

$18,000.

Destination:

HALE LEGACY MANAGEMENT.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Evan appeared.

PLEASE DON’T LISTEN TO TESSA.

A second followed.

THE MONEY IS SAFE.

Then a third.

MOM WAS INVESTING IT FOR MAISIE.

I stared at those words.

He knew exactly what we had discovered.

Which meant someone had told him.

I looked around the kitchen.

Only Rachel.

Tessa.

Me.

Then Tessa’s phone rang.

She looked down.

Margaret.

Tessa rejected the call.

A voicemail notification appeared immediately.

She put it on speaker.

Margaret’s voice filled my kitchen.

“Tessa, come home now.”

A pause.

May you like

Then her tone changed.

“You have no idea what Claire will find if she keeps looking.”
