Chapter 1 - The Silence After the Third Slap

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Evan stood beside the dining table with one hand pressed against his cheek.

His glasses floated crookedly in the mushroom soup.

Margaret still had Maisie beneath the arms.

And my daughter was still crying.

That was the only thing that mattered to me.

I walked straight past my husband and reached for her.

“Give me my daughter.”

Margaret tightened her grip.

“You are not taking her anywhere while you’re acting like a lunatic.”

Something inside me went frighteningly calm.

“Margaret.”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“Take your hands off my child.”

Perhaps she heard something in my voice that had never been there before.

Perhaps she finally realized that every insult I had swallowed over seven years had reached its limit.

Whatever the reason, she released Maisie.

I pulled my daughter against my chest.

Her little body shook.

Her face was wet with tears.

I pressed my lips to her hair.

“Mommy’s here.”

Margaret pointed toward me.

“Did everyone see that?”

Her voice rose.

“She assaulted my son three times.”

Nobody answered.

Margaret turned toward Tessa.

“You were filming.”

Tessa’s phone was still raised.

“Tessa, you filmed Claire attacking Evan.”

Tessa looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

Slowly.

Completely.

She lowered the phone.

“Mom.”

Margaret snapped, “What?”

Tessa swallowed.

“I wasn’t recording.”

Margaret looked confused.

Then Tessa said the words that changed the entire room.

“I was livestreaming.”

The color drained from Evan’s face.

Margaret stared at her daughter.

“How many people?”

Tessa looked down.

“Eight hundred and twelve when Maisie spilled the soup.”

Nobody breathed.

She refreshed the screen.

“Four thousand now.”

Margaret rushed toward her.

“Turn it off.”

Tessa stepped backward.

“Mom.”

“TURN IT OFF.”

Tessa’s fingers shook as she ended the broadcast.

Margaret grabbed for the phone.

“Delete it.”

“I can’t.”

“You can delete anything.”

“No.”

Tessa looked at me.

“The platform automatically saved the live video.”

Margaret’s expression became terrifyingly blank.

She had spent years controlling what people saw.

She controlled family photos.

Birthday invitations.

Holiday seating.

What Evan told his friends about me.

What her relatives believed about our marriage.

She controlled the story.

But tonight, thousands of strangers had watched the truth happen in real time.

Margaret suddenly looked at Evan.

“Call Arthur.”

I knew that name.

Arthur Voss had been the Hale family attorney for more than twenty years.

Evan finally moved.

“Mom, maybe we should—”

“CALL HIM.”

Maisie flinched at Margaret’s voice.

That decided everything.

I picked up my purse.

Margaret blocked the doorway.

“You walk out now, Claire, and don’t expect to come crawling back tomorrow.”

I stared at her.

“I won’t.”

Evan stepped toward me.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

He sounded frightened now.

Not when his mother struck our daughter.

Now.

When I was leaving.

“Move.”

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

His eyes flickered.

“That’s my home too.”

“For tonight.”

Something in my answer made him stop.

I carried Maisie toward the front door.

Behind me, Margaret hissed something to Evan that I could not hear.

Then Tessa caught my arm.

She leaned close enough that nobody else could hear.

“Claire.”

I turned.

Her face was pale.

“There’s something else on that livestream.”

“What?”

May you like

Tessa looked over my shoulder at her mother.

“The slap wasn’t the worst thing it recorded.”
