Chapter 15 - The Edited Woman

By Friday morning, my face was everywhere.
Someone released the private recordings.
Not all of them.
Only the worst fragments.
CLAIRE: I cannot do this anymore.
CLAIRE: I swear I am going to lose my mind.
CLAIRE: Sometimes I want to take Maisie and disappear.
CLAIRE: Your mother makes me hate this family.
The missing context did not matter online.
People decided who I was in fifteen seconds.
My employer received hundreds of emails.
Parents from Maisie’s daycare whispered in the parking lot.
A woman I had never met called me dangerous while I was buying milk.
I came home and locked the door.
For the first time since the birthday dinner, I broke.
Not because strangers hated me.
Because Margaret had turned my own voice into a weapon.
Every tired confession.
Every private frustration.
Every moment I thought I was speaking safely inside my own home.
Stolen.
Edited.
Published.
Rachel found me sitting on the bathroom floor.
Maisie was asleep in the next room.
“I can’t do this.”
I whispered.
Rachel sat beside me.
“Yes, you can.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I mean I cannot live like every sentence will be cut apart.”
“So don’t.”
I looked at her.
“Stop defending yourself to strangers.”
She squeezed my hand.
“You know who needs the truth?”
“Maisie.”
“Exactly.”
That night, I turned off social media.
I stopped reading comments.
Danielle handled press inquiries.
Tessa issued one short statement.
THE RECORDINGS RELEASED TODAY WERE EDITED.
THE FULL FILES HAVE BEEN PROVIDED TO THE COURT.
Margaret responded through Arthur.
She claimed she had no involvement.
Then something unexpected happened.
Arthur disappeared.
Not literally.
His office closed.
His phone went unanswered.
His law partners issued a statement saying he had taken an immediate personal leave.
Danielle did not believe it.
Neither did federal investigators now reviewing the trust transfers.
Two days later, authorities executed a search warrant at Arthur’s office.
Documents were removed.
Computers.
Boxes.
Hard drives.
Then Margaret called Evan nineteen times.
He did not answer.
On the twentieth attempt, she left a voicemail.
Evan sent it to Danielle.
Margaret sounded furious.
“Your father created this mess.”
Then her voice dropped.
“If Claire finds the blue ledger, we are finished.”
I listened twice.
“The blue ledger?”
Tessa immediately stood.
“I’ve seen it.”
“Where?”
“Dad’s floor safe.”
Danielle looked at her.
“Do you know the combination?”
Tessa nodded.
“No.”
My hope vanished.
Then she continued.
“But Evan does.”
We all turned toward him.
He stared at the floor.
“I did.”
“What do you mean, did?”
“Mom changed the safe after Dad died.”
Danielle frowned.
“Then how do we get it?”
Evan looked at me.
“We don’t.”
May you like
He swallowed.
“Because the safe isn’t in the house anymore.”
