Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The answer led me to a name I had not heard since childhood.

Evelyn Kingsley.

My father's younger sister.

According to the family records, Evelyn had died twenty-eight years earlier.

Arthur opened an old file.

“She didn't die.”

I stared at him.

“Where is she?”

“We don't know.”

“Then how do you know she is alive?”

Because of Bluebird.

The original trust document contained a second beneficiary.

Evelyn.

She had disappeared after accusing my grandfather of illegally controlling the family assets.

My father had spent years trying to find her.

He never succeeded.

Until now.

Arthur had uncovered an old address in Maine.

We drove there under heavy security.

Evelyn answered the door herself.

She was seventy years old.

Silver hair.

Sharp eyes.

And a small silver bird pendant around her neck.

I stared at it.

“Bluebird.”

She smiled sadly.

“So your father finally left you the truth.”

“You knew.”

“I knew he was afraid.”

“Of what?”

She looked past me toward the road.

“Of the people who were supposed to inherit the family empire.”

I stepped inside.

Evelyn showed me boxes of documents.

My father's handwriting covered many of them.

She explained that Bluebird had not been created simply to protect money.

It had been created to prevent outsiders from controlling the successor.

Ellie was not merely an heir.

She was the legal key to the future voting structure of the Kingsley companies.

Grant needed custody of her before the trust activated.

He had built an entire marriage around that objective.

I whispered,

“Did my father know Grant would marry me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he stop it?”

“Because your father wanted Grant close.”

I stared at her.

“That sounds insane.”

“He believed he could expose Grant before Grant realized he had been discovered.”

“Did he?”

Evelyn's face darkened.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because your father died first.”

The room went silent.

Then Evelyn handed me a photograph.

Grant stood in it beside his father.

Vanessa was there.

And another man stood behind them.

I recognized him immediately.

My father's former chief financial officer.

I whispered his name.

“Richard Vale.”

Evelyn nodded.

May you like

“He is the man who has been moving the pieces.”
