Months later, Grant asked to see me.
I agreed.
He sat across from me in a visiting room.
He looked smaller.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
His arrogance was gone.
“Mara.”
I said nothing.
“I made a mistake.”
“You made hundreds.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“Do you regret cheating on me?”
“Yes.”
“Do you regret trying to take Ellie?”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
“Do you regret the money?”
A bitter smile appeared.
“No.”
That answer surprised me.
He looked at me.
“I regret believing money could make me powerful.”
I stood.
“You were powerful.”
He frowned.
“For seven years, I trusted you.”
I walked toward the door.
“That was the greatest power anyone ever gave you.”
