Chapter 2 - The File My Father Hid

By the time I reached the Kingsley estate, three black security vehicles were already waiting at the gates.
That alone told me how serious the situation was.
My father had built the estate to withstand almost anything.
He had once joked that the house had enough cameras to watch a bird sneeze.
After his death, I had turned most of the security systems into background noise.
That night, nothing felt like background noise.
Everything felt like a warning.
Arthur Bell was waiting for me in my father's old study.
Arthur had been my father's attorney for more than thirty years.
He rarely showed emotion.
That night, his face looked grim.
“You made the call,” he said.
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Then the contingency has been activated.”
I froze.
“What contingency?”
Arthur locked the study door.
Then he placed a sealed black folder on the desk.
My father's handwriting was across the front.
For Mara only.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
The first document was a custody petition.
My name appeared at the top.
Mother unstable.
Mother financially irresponsible.
Mother emotionally dependent.
Mother incapable of providing a safe environment for the child.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
“When was this filed?”
“It hasn't been filed yet.”
Arthur's voice was quiet.
“It was prepared six weeks ago.”
My stomach dropped.
Six weeks.
Six weeks ago, Grant had kissed me goodbye in the kitchen.
Six weeks ago, he had told me he was working late.
Six weeks ago, he had tucked Ellie into bed and whispered that she was his little princess.
While he was doing that, lawyers were preparing to take her away from me.
I turned another page.
A note was attached.
Primary objective: establish Mara as an unfit mother before activation of Bluebird.
I looked up.
“What is Bluebird?”
Arthur took a slow breath.
“Your father created it fifteen years ago.”
“For me?”
“No.”
He looked toward a framed photograph of Ellie.
“For her.”
I stared at my daughter’s picture.
“Ellie?”
“Yes.”
He pushed another document toward me.
At the top, in bold black letters, were four words.
BLUEBIRD BENEFICIARY: ELLIE MERCER.
I felt cold.
“What is it?”
Arthur lowered his voice.
“Control.”
“Control of what?”
“The family empire.”
I sat down.
He continued.
“Your father did not trust a spouse to control it.”
He paused.
“And he certainly did not trust the person you married.”
My mouth went dry.
“You knew about Grant?”
“Your father suspected him.”
“Why didn't he tell me?”
Arthur looked at the floor.
“Because he believed the safest way to protect you was to let Grant think he had succeeded.”
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“He knew Grant was dangerous.”
Arthur nodded.
“And he knew you would eventually have a child.”
I looked at Ellie's photograph again.
Suddenly the hotel scene made sense.
The affair.
The custody petition.
The money.
The mistress.
Everything had been leading somewhere.
May you like
And that somewhere was my daughter.
