Chapter 9 – A Father's Promise

The sound of shattering porcelain echoed through Mariana's office.

For one terrifying second, she couldn't move.

"What happened?" she demanded, already reaching for her coat.

Jonathan's voice remained steady, though she could hear the concern beneath it.

"He collapsed after the meeting."

"Is he conscious?"

"They've taken him to St. Gabriel Medical Center."

"I'm on my way."

Ten minutes later, Mariana rushed through the hospital doors.

Jonathan was waiting outside the intensive care unit.

"How is he?"

"The doctors say it wasn't a heart attack."

Mariana exhaled shakily.

"It was exhaustion and dangerously high blood pressure. They believe the stress finally caught up with him."

She closed her eyes in relief.

Jonathan gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

"He's asking for you."

Alejandro Escalante looked smaller than Mariana had ever seen him.

The man who had spent decades building one of the nation's largest investment empires now lay quietly in a hospital bed, connected to monitors that beeped steadily.

When he saw his daughter, he smiled.

"You look terrible."

Mariana laughed through the tears gathering in her eyes.

"So do you."

He reached for her hand.

"You've always been stronger than I was."

She shook her head.

"No."

"I only learned from you."

Alejandro studied her bruised cheek.

"I failed you."

"You didn't."

"I should have stopped you from sacrificing your life for a man who never deserved it."

Mariana squeezed his hand.

"I made that choice."

"You made it because you loved him."

A long silence settled between them.

Finally, Alejandro spoke again.

"Promise me something."

"Anything."

"When this is over..."

"...don't spend the rest of your life looking backward."

She frowned.

"I don't understand."

"Revenge can become another prison."

His voice was weaker now.

"Take back what belongs to you."

"Demand justice."

"But don't let Andrew own another day of your future."

Mariana felt tears spill onto her cheeks.

"I promise."

Alejandro smiled.

"That's my girl."

Meanwhile...

Andrew sat alone inside his dark apartment.

He hadn't returned to the mansion.

It no longer felt like home.

His phone had been silent for hours.

No calls from Brenda.

No calls from his mother.

No invitations from friends who had once crowded around his success.

Only headlines.

INVESTORS DEMAND INVESTIGATION

Each notification felt like another brick added to the weight crushing his chest.

Then the television caught his attention.

Breaking News.

A reporter stood outside St. Gabriel Medical Center.

"Sources confirm that billionaire investor Alejandro Escalante was admitted earlier today following a medical emergency..."

Andrew froze.

Escalante.

The name echoed through his mind.

He had heard it before.

Years ago.

Long before he met Mariana.

His eyes widened.

He rushed to his bookshelf and pulled out an old business magazine.

The cover featured one of the most influential families in American finance.

There they were.

Alejandro Escalante...

His late wife...

And between them...

A young woman in her early twenties.

Smiling.

Confident.

Elegant.

Mariana.

Andrew stared at the photograph as though it might suddenly disappear.

"No..."

He whispered.

"It can't be..."

His hands trembled as memories crashed into him.

Every time Mariana avoided discussing her family.

Every mysterious business connection.

Every impossible contract.

Every crisis she somehow solved.

It all made sense now.

His knees gave way, and he sank into the chair.

The woman he had called worthless...

The woman he had ordered to kneel...

Had never needed his name.

She had carried one far more powerful all along.

Andrew covered his face with both hands.

For the first time...

He understood exactly what he had lost.

But as he sat there drowning in regret, his phone lit up with another notification.

Incoming Call – Brenda Collins

Andrew stared at the screen.

After three days of silence...

His former mistress had finally decided to call.

May you like

He answered.

What he heard next would change everything.
