Chapter 2 – The Morning Everything Collapsed

Andrew Whitmore woke to the vibration of his phone.

Then another.

And another.

By the time he reached for it, the screen was flooded with missed calls from executives, bankers, and members of the board.

He frowned.

"What the hell...?"

Beside him, Brenda stretched beneath the silk sheets, smiling lazily.

"Ignore them," she murmured. "It's Saturday."

Andrew smirked, convinced the world could wait.

Then his phone rang again.

Daniel Carter. Chief Financial Officer.

The moment he answered, Daniel didn't bother with greetings.

"Andrew, where are you?"

"At home."

"You need to get to headquarters. Right now."

Andrew sat upright.

"What's going on?"

There was a long pause.

"Our operating accounts have been frozen."

Andrew laughed.

"That's impossible."

"I'm looking at the notices myself," Daniel replied. "Every corporate account. Every investment fund. Every line of credit."

Andrew swung his legs off the bed.

"There has to be some mistake."

"I thought so too."

Another pause.

"The banks say there wasn't."

For the first time that morning, unease settled in Andrew's chest.

He threw on a suit while Brenda watched from the bed.

"Is something wrong?"

"Just a banking issue."

She smiled confidently.

"You'll fix it."

He wanted to believe that.

Forty minutes later, Andrew stormed into Whitmore Industries.

The lobby, usually buzzing with confidence, was unnaturally quiet.

Employees avoided eye contact.

Conversations stopped as he walked past.

Inside the executive conference room, every department head was already waiting.

The atmosphere felt more like a funeral than a business meeting.

Daniel pushed a stack of documents across the table.

"The banks refused every transaction."

"Our payroll can't be processed."

"Three suppliers have suspended deliveries."

"Our largest investors are demanding explanations."

Andrew scanned the pages, his heartbeat quickening.

Every notice carried the same sentence:

Authorization revoked.

Primary ownership has assumed direct control.

His face hardened.

"Who authorized this?"

No one answered.

The conference room doors opened.

Jonathan Pierce walked in with three attorneys dressed in dark suits.

Andrew frowned.

"What are you doing here?"

Jonathan placed a sealed envelope on the polished table.

"I'm here to deliver official notice."

Andrew tore it open.

His confidence vanished with the first paragraph.

By unanimous authorization of Escalante Strategic Capital...

Effective immediately...

Andrew Whitmore was suspended as Chief Executive Officer pending a full ownership review.

He stared at the signature at the bottom.

Mariana Escalante.

His hands trembled.

"No..."

He whispered the word more to himself than anyone else.

"This can't be."

Jonathan met his eyes without emotion.

"It already has."

Andrew slammed both hands onto the table.

"Mariana doesn't own this company!"

Jonathan calmly slid one final document toward him.

It was the original shareholder registry.

Every controlling share...

Every trust...

Every holding company...

Led back to one name.

Mariana Isabella Escalante.

The room fell into stunned silence.

For the first time in his life...

Andrew realized the empire he had spent years boasting about had never truly belonged to him.

And somewhere across the city...

The woman he had ordered to kneel was preparing to take back every last piece of it.
