Chapter 3 – The Queen Returns

The executive elevator opened onto the top floor of Escalante Global Headquarters.

Mariana stepped out in a tailored ivory pantsuit, her hair neatly pulled back, the faint bruise on her cheek hidden beneath light makeup. She had no interest in disguising what had happened forever—only in ensuring it would never distract from what came next.

The reception staff straightened immediately.

"Good morning, Ms. Escalante."

She acknowledged them with a nod and continued toward the boardroom.

Inside, the directors were already seated. Financial reports, legal briefs, and acquisition files covered the polished oak table.

Jonathan Pierce stood.

"Good morning, everyone. Ms. Escalante has arrived."

Every person in the room rose to their feet.

Mariana took her seat at the head of the table—the chair that had remained empty during her years undercover inside Whitmore Industries.

Jonathan activated the large screen.

"Status report."

A chart appeared.

"Corporate accounts successfully secured."

"Control of Whitmore Industries has been transferred."

"Three major lenders have suspended Andrew Whitmore's personal borrowing privileges."

"The media has not yet been informed."

Mariana folded her hands.

"It stays that way."

Several directors exchanged curious glances.

One finally spoke.

"Ms. Escalante, with respect... the public will eventually learn the truth."

"I know."

"Then why wait?"

She looked around the room before answering.

"Because this isn't about revenge."

The room grew quiet.

"It's about accountability."

She remembered every insult Margaret had disguised as etiquette.

Every fundraiser where Andrew accepted praise for deals Mariana had negotiated.

Every lonely night she stayed awake fixing financial disasters while he celebrated victories he believed were his alone.

She could have exposed them years ago.

Instead, she had chosen love.

Now she was choosing self-respect.

Jonathan slid another folder toward her.

"Our investigators completed the internal audit."

Mariana opened it.

The deeper she read, the colder her expression became.

Unauthorized luxury purchases.

Corporate funds used for Brenda's jewelry.

Private vacations billed as executive meetings.

Hidden consulting contracts issued to shell companies.

She stopped on one page.

A diamond necklace.

The invoice date matched the week Margaret had accused Mariana of stealing the family emerald necklace.

Brenda had purchased the diamonds with company money while Mariana had been publicly humiliated.

Jonathan spoke carefully.

"It appears the missing necklace accusation was staged."

Another document followed.

Security records.

Phone logs.

Text messages.

Everything pointed to the same conclusion.

Brenda and Margaret had planned the accusation days in advance.

Andrew had never asked for proof.

He had simply chosen to believe them.

Mariana closed the folder.

"I want copies sent to our litigation team."

Jonathan nodded.

"And Mr. Whitmore?"

She looked out through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below.

"For four years, I protected him from every consequence."

She turned back, her voice calm and unwavering.

"Starting today..."

"He can finally meet them."

At that exact moment, across town, Andrew's personal attorney rushed into his office with a face drained of color.

"There’s... there's something else you need to see."

He dropped a thick envelope onto Andrew's desk.

Stamped across the front in bold black letters were the words:

May you like

NOTICE OF DIVORCE AND CIVIL ACTION.

Andrew's hands froze before he reached for it. The nightmare, he realized, had only just begun.
