Chapter 13 – The Price of Deception

Three weeks after the divorce became official, the courthouse was full once again.

This time, Mariana wasn't there as a wife.

She was there as a witness.

Outside, reporters lined the steps from dawn, broadcasting every development live. The scandal had become national news—not because of the fortune involved, but because of the lies that had destroyed a family.

Inside the courtroom, Margaret Whitmore sat stiffly beside her attorney, dressed in an expensive navy suit that could no longer hide the fear in her eyes.

Brenda Collins looked very different from the glamorous woman who had once clung to Andrew's arm.

The confidence was gone.

So was the designer jewelry.

She had agreed to testify in exchange for a reduced sentence.

The prosecutor called her to the stand.

"Ms. Collins, who suggested accusing Mariana Escalante of stealing the emerald necklace?"

Brenda swallowed hard.

"Margaret Whitmore."

The courtroom fell silent.

"And why?"

"She said... if Andrew believed Mariana had betrayed the family, he'd finally leave her."

The prosecutor continued.

"Did Mr. Whitmore know the accusation was false?"

Brenda shook her head.

"No."

"He believed us."

Margaret suddenly stood.

"She's lying!"

The judge struck the gavel.

"Mrs. Whitmore, sit down."

Margaret ignored him.

"She's saying anything to save herself!"

Brenda turned toward her, tears streaming down her face.

"You told me Mariana would never fight back."

"You said no one would believe her."

"You promised we'd have everything."

Margaret's face turned pale.

She realized the woman she had manipulated had become the witness who would destroy her.

Mariana sat quietly in the front row.

She felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Four years of marriage...

Countless memories...

All reduced to sworn testimony and legal exhibits.

Jonathan leaned toward her.

"Are you alright?"

She nodded.

"I've waited a long time for the truth."

He smiled gently.

"And now?"

Mariana watched the proceedings.

"Now it's no longer mine to carry."

Late that afternoon, the judge delivered his ruling.

Margaret Whitmore was found liable for filing a false criminal report, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice.

Brenda Collins was convicted of financial fraud and ordered to repay every dollar she had stolen.

As officers approached, Margaret turned toward Andrew, who had quietly attended every hearing.

"You have to do something!"

He looked at his mother for a long moment.

Memories flooded back.

Every cruel remark she had made to Mariana.

Every time he had remained silent.

Every warning Mariana had ignored because she loved him.

He lowered his eyes.

"I can't."

Margaret's shoulders collapsed.

For the first time in her life...

No one came to rescue her.

As deputies escorted her from the courtroom, she glanced back at Mariana.

She expected anger.

She expected triumph.

Instead...

Mariana simply looked at her with quiet pity.

And somehow...

That hurt Margaret more than any sentence the judge could have imposed.

Outside the courthouse, Jonathan's phone rang.

He answered, listened carefully, then looked toward Mariana.

"There’s one final matter."

She raised an eyebrow.

"What is it?"

Jonathan smiled.

"Your father just left the hospital."

For the first time in months...

May you like

Mariana smiled without a trace of pain.

The storm was finally beginning to pass.
