CHAPTER 3: THE HIDDEN DIAGNOSIS
The room felt smaller now.
Emma’s fingers trembled against her belly. “Then what is it?”
Dr. Harris hesitated.
That hesitation was worse than any answer.
Finally, he said:
“There is a condition we rarely see… where development begins abnormally early and forms two separate embryonic structures.”
Daniel frowned. “Twins?”
“No,” the doctor replied. “Not exactly.”
He turned off the probe gently.
“This is what we call a vanishing twin complication. But in your case…”
He paused again.
“It appears one embryo has absorbed the genetic markers of another.”
Emma went pale.
“I don’t understand…”
Dr. Harris looked at her now—not Daniel.
“That means this child may not have a single biological origin as assumed.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched.
“So you’re saying she cheated,” he said coldly.
Emma jerked her head toward him.
“That’s not what he said!”
But Daniel had already made his decision.
He stepped back.
