CHAPTER 1: THE SILENCE AFTER THE WORDS

The ultrasound room was still warm, but the air inside had turned sharp.

Emma lay frozen on the examination bed, one hand instinctively covering her stomach. Daniel stood beside her, no longer looking at her—only at the glowing monitor like it might betray him.

Dr. Harris didn’t speak right away.

That silence lasted only a few seconds…

But it felt like it split Emma’s world in half.

“Doctor?” Emma whispered, her voice fragile. “Is something wrong with my baby?”

The doctor adjusted his glasses slowly. His eyes didn’t leave the screen.

Daniel exhaled sharply. “Just say it. Whatever it is.”

Dr. Harris finally spoke.

But not to Emma.

He looked at Daniel.

And said, quietly:

“This pregnancy is not what you think it is.”

Emma blinked.

Daniel stiffened.

“What does that mean?” Emma asked, her voice breaking slightly.

May you like

But the doctor didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he turned the screen slightly toward Daniel… as if forcing him to face something he had been running from.
