Chapter 8 Harold Lawson's Final Warning

Emily stared at the label through the clear evidence bag.

For Emily Carter. Open Only If Anything Happens To Me.

Her hands remained perfectly still.

Only her heartbeat betrayed what she was feeling.

Daniel Pierce carefully placed the locked metal box on the conference table.

"It was recovered from the storage locker less than an hour ago."

"The fire destroyed almost everything else."

Emily looked at the black scorch marks covering the sides of the box.

"Who rented the locker?"

"A man using a false identity."

"But surveillance footage shows Harold Lawson entering the facility several times during the past year."

Claire slowly sat down.

"My father in law?"

Daniel nodded.

"He visited alone."

"Never with Michael."

Emily frowned.

"I thought Harold retired."

"So did everyone else."

Daniel folded his arms.

"Our investigation suggests he stepped away from the company after repeated disagreements with the board."

"What kind of disagreements?"

"No one knows."

Marcus looked at the box.

"Can we open it?"

Daniel shook his head.

"The forensic team is on its way."

"If there are fingerprints or DNA, we can't risk contaminating the evidence."

Emily nodded in agreement.

Just then, Claire's phone began ringing.

She looked at the screen.

Her face immediately turned pale.

"It's Michael."

Everyone watched as she answered.

"Michael?"

Silence.

Then her expression changed completely.

"What?"

She stood so suddenly that her chair tipped backward.

"When?"

Another long silence.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I'll be there."

She ended the call without another word.

Emily stepped toward her.

"What happened?"

Claire struggled to speak.

"My father in law..."

She took a shaky breath.

"Harold collapsed this morning."

The room became silent.

"They rushed him to St. Andrew's."

"He had a massive heart attack."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"What condition is he in?"

Claire whispered the answer.

"He's alive."

"But the doctors don't think he'll survive the night."

Emily looked at the locked box.

If Harold Lawson had prepared evidence...

And if he was dying...

Then time was running out.

Daniel immediately turned to one of the investigators.

"Call the hospital."

"I want police protection outside his room."

The investigator hurried away.

Emily looked at Claire.

"We need to talk to him."

Claire nodded.

"If he can still speak."

Within thirty minutes, Emily, Claire, Daniel, and Emily's father arrived at St. Andrew's Hospital.

The intensive care unit was unusually quiet.

Machines hummed softly behind closed doors.

Michael stood alone outside Room 418.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His eyes were bloodshot.

The confident surgeon Emily had known for years looked exhausted.

He looked up as they approached.

His eyes settled on Emily.

"I know why you're here."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mr. Lawson."

"We'd like to ask your father a few questions."

Michael slowly shook his head.

"If he wakes up..."

"You won't have much time."

Emily studied his face carefully.

He looked devastated.

Not guilty.

Just heartbroken.

For the first time, she wondered if he had truly known nothing.

Michael turned toward her.

"I swear to you..."

"I've never seen that storage box."

Emily believed him.

Not because he was family.

Because his grief was real.

A nurse stepped into the hallway.

"Only two visitors."

Harold's wife had passed away years earlier.

Michael looked at Emily.

"He asked for you."

Emily blinked.

"What?"

"He woke up for a few seconds."

"He couldn't speak."

"But he wrote your name."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You've met him before?"

Emily nodded slowly.

"Only once."

It had been almost four years earlier.

At a charity fundraiser.

Harold had quietly introduced himself.

He thanked Emily for improving infection safety in several hospitals.

Their conversation had lasted less than five minutes.

Emily had never spoken to him again.

Yet somehow...

He remembered her.

Emily entered the room with Daniel.

Harold Lawson looked impossibly frail.

The powerful businessman from magazine covers had become a thin old man connected to tubes and monitors.

His eyes slowly opened.

When he saw Emily, he managed a faint smile.

She stepped closer.

"Mr. Lawson."

His trembling hand reached toward the bedside table.

Daniel quickly handed him a pen and notepad.

Harold struggled to write.

Every letter seemed painful.

Finally he pushed the paper toward Emily.

It contained only four words.

I am sorry.

Emily looked at him.

"For what?"

He slowly wrote again.

Longer this time.

The letters were uneven.

Some barely readable.

But together they formed a sentence that changed everything.

Your mother was never the mastermind.

Emily stared at the words.

Daniel immediately leaned closer.

"If not Susan..."

"...then who?"

Harold tried to write again.

His hand shook violently.

The pen slipped from his fingers.

Monitors suddenly began sounding.

The nurse rushed into the room.

"Step back."

Doctors flooded inside.

Michael pushed past everyone.

"Dad!"

Emily stood frozen near the doorway.

As nurses worked desperately around the bed, she looked down.

Another piece of paper had fallen onto the floor unnoticed.

She picked it up.

Only half the sentence was visible.

The remaining portion had been smeared by water.

She could still read six words.

Board Chairman... trusted... never sign... vault...

Before she could study it further, Daniel quietly took the note.

"This becomes evidence."

Emily nodded.

She understood.

But she could not stop thinking about Harold's final message.

Your mother was never the mastermind.

Outside the room, Michael emerged twenty minutes later.

His surgical gloves were stained with tears instead of blood.

He removed his mask.

The hallway fell silent before he spoke.

"My father is gone."

Claire wrapped her arms around her husband.

He held her tightly without saying another word.

Daniel lowered his head respectfully.

Then his phone vibrated.

He answered immediately.

After only a few seconds, his expression became serious.

"What is it?" Emily asked.

Daniel slowly put the phone away.

"The forensic team finally opened the metal box."

Everyone looked at him.

"They found financial records."

"Private journals."

"Hospital contracts."

"And one sealed envelope."

Emily held her breath.

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

"The envelope is addressed to you."

"And according to the investigators..."

"It contains the name of the person Harold Lawson believed was responsible for everything."

No one spoke.

Daniel swallowed once before finishing.

May you like

"The name inside..."

"...is not one any of us expected."
